Default Is it true that the mugen headgasket retards the timing?

I just installed jdm itr pistons and a mugen headgasket and I noticed my camgears don't quite line up....they're close but still off. I read a thread somewhere suggesting to advance the intake cam about 2 degrees to make up for the retarded timing...now should I advance both the intake and exhaust cam? And about how many degrees does the headgasket retard the timing?

thanks.

When you shorten the distance from the cam to the crank, your timing belt naturally moves the cam gears slightly. It is not a huge retard by any means, maybe 2-3deg at the most, but you can realize more power by tuning cam gears once the headgasket has been installed.

Yes - anything you do to change the deck height will alter the cam timing. Without degreeing the cams you are really just guessing. Best thing to do is to have the car tuned and include cam gear adjustment as part of the process.

damn, so you guys can't give me a guesstimate of how much I should adjust the cam gears until I am ready for tuning?

About 2deg, but you really should leave them zero'd until you degree the cams like Ausmith said before.

About 1 degree, but honestly its not going to make a material difference in the powerband. You are changing deck height by approx .010". One of the ITR motors we built this year used a Mugen gasket along with .035" shaved off the head and another .005" off of the block. Now that's the scenario where degreeing the cams and getting back to 0 is important.
