What can i get as a starting bike for $4k?
IM looking to finally take the plunge and learn hwo to ride. IM a pure virgin, never rode anythign but my huffy 20 speed. I want a good bike to learn on that is affordable and that will last me a while. Hoping for some deals if i buy in the winter. Thats guys. Lemme know what i should look for.
You can find plenty of bikes 2001 and older. For startes I would recommend a Honda CBR600 F4i. You can find them for around $3500-$4500 depending on condition. Just keep looking. I would shoot for less but if you have the $$$ spend it!
go to http://www.sportbikes.net there are so many threads for new riders and a lot of awesome info.

But take it easy, that F4 is still a bad starter bike.

Yea i knwo it was dropped and so does he. He seems liek a nice and legit guy, goes to my school. I mean i may be able to get it down to 3000 or so...think its a good buy with that?
Main thing is, it has to be in very good mechanical working order.

$4k could get you a decent bike. you could get something like that F3 that marmaladeboy is selling and have money left over to buy some gear. His is mechanically sound, but it is in cali. I'm sure that something is available in your neck of the woods.
I would not trust any F4i for that cheap. that price would be way too good to be true. i have mine listed at $6k...It would have to be almost non-operational for me to take that little $$$.

Check through http://www.kbb.com and look through motorcycle years and prices.
If you are a total virgin and never really riden any type of motorized two wheeled machine, go to your local MVA (or community collage if offered there) and sign up for the MSF BRC course. You will get about 8 hrs of classroom time and 10 hrs of riding time. You'll probably learn on Honda rebels or nighthawks. Low 250cc bikes. Real easy to control. After taking that if you are confident and think riding is right for you, then go check out cycletrader.com, your local classifides, other motorcycle forums, google etc...
There are plenty of good bikes to be had for $4K.
Nothing like getting a newer 600cc sport bike and dropping it your first day and loosing money or not wanting to ride again. It aint for everyone.
Good luck.

Anywhere from $100 - $200 depending on where you live. When you finish the class (provided you can demonstrate basic riding skills and knowledge based on written and physical evaluation) you get a wavor for the state riding test so you walk in hand it to the MVA and get your class M endorsement (or separate license or however your state does it) and ride off. No permit, state test (which is harder or should I said more involved).
Just as a little side fact 90% of ALL motorcycle crashes done in a recent study showed that the riders involved had not taken the MSF course or similar saftey training. Take it for what it's worth.

Very true Mr Hammond. I honestly do not know many people who passed the state tests. i think they are geared for little dirt bikes or like the 125cc MSF bikes.

Thats no good. I may have to go to 3500 cause the MSF is about 200 and i just bought a AR-15 which cost a little more than i was gonna spend
.
Im really thinking about this bike:
http://www.kneedraggin.com/forsale/p1010144.jpg
Its got 24,000 miles and its deff been dropped, but thats ok since im gonan drop it im sure. He wants 3500 but i think i can haggle him down especially cause of the milage. What do you think would be a reasonable offer considering the milage and wear &tear on the bike?
