new tranny making a grinding noise? can anyone help?
well we just bought a new tranny from dirtySol... well its a gsr tranny with an itr lsd.. he said that he replaced a bunch of things on it.. wella.. to set this straight, this is not my first time doing a tranny swap.. i have tons of experience on this stuf.. anyways.. so the tranny is in.. take it for a ride and it doesn't grind or anything.. my friend takes it home and not even 10 miles of driving the car around it starts making this weird grinding noise from the gearbox... it makes it in all gears.. 1-5.. its not as bad in 2nd, but real loud in 3, 4, 5 gear.. we are running GM syncromesh.. any ideas? TIA..
throw out bearing ?
are you sure the drain plug and the other square head plug are tight ?
bled the clutch line
One of my customers cars did the same thing and the throw out bearing was tossed and it went away

Does it make noise when you are driving, or putting it into the next gear. Check the fluid first. If its while you are driving, it could be lots of things and I would take it to a transmission place with a good rep. If its while shifting, the synch is off, most likely, and you'll still be going to a tranmission place cause something is not meshing well in there and could break at any time which puts you on the side of the road.
okay.. here are some details.. the clutch is bled.. lots of fluid.. gear goes in perfect.. it's only when we are off the clutch and the car is moving.. i put it on jackstands to test and replaced the axles with good ones.. still does it.. after testing it i put it into fourth and it feels like it's hitting.. i think dirtySol just messed up somewhere on the build.. clutch is perfect.. was perfect.. everything is in correctly.. im just going to say that it was a bad rebuild.. the tranny is a gsr with itr lsd.. he said that he bought a new mainshaft also... you guys think it's just the tranny..?

A bearing on the mainshaft is fucked.
Open up the tranny, find out which one it is, and replace it.

we aren't goign to touch that tranny.. hes going to refund the 825 to us and pay shipping back.. either that or hes going to give us a new one... i think this is pretty shady.. he said that he double checked everything and all that bs and bought a new mainshaft... we'll see what he says.. hes not replying to me..
he might have messed up the bearing when he put it back in. but damn, i dropped mine and all the bearings fell out (did it twice) and mine isn't making any noise. The old D series did though, and the bearing was shredded
it doesnt grind until u hit 4th gear.. it makes the most noise from what i can tell in 4th.. i haven't tried to go into 5th yet.. looks like imma have to talk to dan about this one.. if he refuses, because he said it would be perfect, we'll just dispute it on paypal.. we paid with a credit card..
nah.. he wont do that.. and we cant do that cuz that'll be shady on our part... it'll make it look like we are just saying this just to make it up.. anyways. im goign to give him a call and see what he says about it..

if the sound goes away when clutch is pressed then it is the throw out bearing!! not internally!!!

I'm gonna have to disagree with you there.

yep.. it's not the throwout bearing.. it's brand new.. its not a stupid throwout bearing sound.. it's an internal constant grinding sound.
heard the tranny myself, sounds bad. real bad
btw thanks eli for helping me do the most difficult clutch job ever in the history of changing clutches. **** i hate h22's now

Because It should be a constant mesh release bearing, so if the linkage is bad than it doesn't matter what shape the bearing is in, it will make a constant grinding noise. especially when driving(when the clutch pedal is not pushed down, and clutch is engaged).
Man i've been post'n than remembering helpful stuff later after i posted, so i've always been editing my posts.
Anyway forgot to tell you a hint to go to the transaxle last, check everything else first. If you have questions ask an auto technician.
