Default Non-ABS to ABS

I have a 95 del Sol Si (w/o ABS) and am looking to add ABS. Is this possible? Is it expensive? Anyone have any comments, suggestions, opinions? Thanks.

i am pretty sure it is possible, everything is possible if you ahve money.

But then you have to ask yourself this question......Why in the hell would you want ABS? You want a machine braking for you? My friend drove into a ditch because the ABS wouldnn't let him slow down fast enough.

Just my $0.02

isnt the concept of ABS to slow you down quicker with the ability to also steer under harsh and extreme stopping conditions?

Im guessing that abs is expensive because my friend was going to replace the abs module in his accord and that wouldve costed him some $$$

your friend drove into a ditch b/c he's a moron. ABS will reduce stopping distances for almost all emergency situations. the "machine" isnt braking for you, it helps your brakes from locking up. locked up tires have much less friction than ones that are still moving (static v. dynamic force of friction).

back to the topic: adding ABS will require the whole braking system to be re-plumbed. all the hard lines need to be changed, sensors need to be installed at all 4 wheels, and wires need to be run. new MC, prop valve, abs hardware (accumulator, pump, computer etc) must be installed. if you were to have a shop doit (assuming you could find one) it would be ~$500+ in labor, ~$1000+ in new parts. definately not worth it.

It's just a matter of how fully depressed the pedal is. You shouldn't drive an ABS-equipped vehicle in the same manner as you would a non-ABS vehicle. You can still brake on an ABS-equipped vehicle the same way you can with a non-ABS vehicle. Just don't fully depress the brake pedal. Jamming on the brake pedal fully will engage the ABS. I, personally, in emergency situations, down-shift to the right gear to engine brake and depress on the brake pedal hard enough to slow the car at a fast rate, but still not lock the brakes up.

As for putting one in, it's a bitch. ABS computer, ABS wiring harness, ABS lines and sensors to each 4 disk brakes (and you need all wheel disk brakes which is recommended to go to larger disk brakes). You'll also need the CV axles with the teeth for ABS (if you don't already), the control arms with the holes to bolt the ABS lines and sensors to them, dash harness with ABS line to hook up to ABS gauge cluster (which you will need also), ABS booster and MC with ABS prop' valve, and the stainless steel lines that run from prop' valve to ABS unit. That's all I can remember from the top of my head.

Edit: Bah! Beat me to it.

All ABS dose is it allows you to control your car under panic situations. If you auto X the first thing you do is disconnect ABS.

I think for all types of racing, it's taken off anyway. Again, for racing.

Personally this is the last mod I would ever want to do. ABS is more involved to service and maintain.....more sh*t to have problems with etc. I'm glad my EX does not have it.

I'm guessing somebody's "friend" should blame something other than ABS

Seriously, it's gonna make everything more expensive, price normal axles and then price ABS equipped ones.

It's also something you don't want to screw up, so I gotta wonder if the fact that you don't know how to do it yourself means you're probably not qualified to try. No offense man, I wouldn't try it either, I'll screw around with my engine, worse thing that can happen is it dies on me, but I don't screw around with brakes.

Yes, you can do it, bottom line, EXTREMELY painful DIY job...

As dantastic stated - lots of work..

If you really want ABS - sell you car and buy one with it installed already.

Besides, it's more weight on your car. Yes, ABS is a decent luxury if your car already comes equipped with it, but by no means do you need it. Just look at how many 5th and 6th gen Civics didn't come with ABS.
