Default transmission grinding???

Okay I come home for the holidays and get in the car and I decide to drive it home from the bus stop. To my dismay 5th gear grinds when you put it in gear sometimes and it makes a (from what was audible) a "wwwhhiiirrrrrr" sound. It does this sometimes and depends what gear you switch it from. For example 4th to 5th will go in fine sometimes but 3rd to 5th, blech...grinding. Anybody ever experience this before? It's a '97 Accord LX.

put in redline mtl, bg synchroshift, or royal purple gear oil, the reason it grinds is because the gearing is too tall and the synchros cant move/engage quickly enough

You could remove/replace the transmission, but tranny internals are horribly complex. Taking the gear apart is one thing, getting them back together properly is totally another thing. Most people replace them or get them rebuilt by pros.

There is a recall on the grinding 5th gear. Honda will fix it. I think they might actually replace 5th gear, i will ask at work on thursday (i work at Honda). Lude trannies do the same thing. The guys in the lude forum are complaining about the same thing.

Yeah, I recall there was a TSB on this. It was for the 4th gen Preludes, right, not the 5g?

Hey, I had the exact same problem. Whenever I was driving on the Highway, I'd have to double-clutch into 5th gear or it would grind. For now, just double clutch and that should work. I took my car to my local Honda dealer to see what the problem was. I told them how it would grind from 4th to 5th. According to the Invoice Sheet, they removed the transmission and replaced the "Synchromesh gears", a "sleeve se", and the "fork comp". I bitched at Honda saying that I had only had the car for 6 months and car has under 25,000 on it (I bought it used) and this should not be happening, so they covered 50% of the repair. Total expense for me was under $600. Hope that helps you. I haven't had the problem since.

Hey, I have the exact 4th - 5th gear problem with my car. Does anyone think Honda will take care of this or even pay for part of it on a Hybrid with 165,000 miles on the odometer?
