A bet
I have made a bet with a friend about the possibility of beating his 97 trans-am, essentially stock, with a CRX that costs less than 5g total. I need help with feasability, costs, ideas etc. I'm really trying to do it for about 3500 but 5g is the limit for sure.
My current idea is to use a b18 block with a b16 VTEC...an LS/VTEC Frankenstein in a 89 CRX. I'm hoping to find a CRX with a blown engine for less than $1000 and as for the engine i need some help on the best way to get the block, head, tranny, etc to finish the conversion.
Basically the car is gonna hafta run mid to high 12's
I know the HASport mount kit costs about 450 dollars so consider that too...thanks in advance for any help.

Just get the B16a motor, stick some pistons, rods in it and put a 100 shot on it.....that is under 2500. Then find a 87 crx to put it in...car = 500....so that is 3000. Then do the rest in fuel, intake manifold, exhaust, header, intake, and suspension. That should put you around the 5K mark. That also should be good for around mid 11's easy with some slicks.

id say gsr with a turbo should be good for low 12s high 11s with the right driver the trans am is only gonna run a 13 anyway its very feisable i have a 86 trans am and my hatch would kill it now but get a b18c1 and a turbo kit as my good buddy phattwhippin_crx would say and i quote "REVHARD MOTHER ****** REVHARD" ull beat him and he wont know wut hit em
I would go w/Blown90Hatch said that would be the easiest way for you to hit high 12's. If not go w/a B20 non-vtec and put a 75 shot on it in a CRX and hope the motor doesn't blow that way for sure you'll be in the high 12's.

not gonna happen.
CRX HF with blown motor $1000
B16 swap with mounts and small parts = $2000-2200
Slicks+wheels = $500
100 direct port NOS kit with upgraded pump = $700
That is $4200 right there.
Besides the TA with "easy mods" and some BFG Drag Radials will run 11.9-12.2 all day long.
Yes my other car is a stock 86 TA, slow yes. But local F Body club members are running 11.4's on the 99+ LS1's with ease.

If i never had my rex i think i would go with a trans am the body style looks a little wack but there pretty quick with the lt1 we dynoed one with cai and t.b. it put out a little over 300ft lbs of torque and like 270 hp thats pretty good.

junkyard turbo on an LS should do it, with a gutted CRX. 1st gen with a blown engine should cost much less than $1000.
A good running '00 SS camaro with drag radials and bolt-ons does good to go 12.9 here...
That's automatic on a good stall. No driver skill needed.
I'm feeling a 2nd gen CRX HF with a b16a motor swap, Integra in tank pump, used CTR pistons, CTR/ITR cams, race header, no exhaust, 75 shot on 13" or 14" slicks. You win.
My roommate bought a RUNNING DX CRX for $1200. It was beat up, but that's not what counts... Find a light hit that took out the radiator support, and put junkyard parts back on it. Voila, you have a decent 2nd gen CRX for $500.
CRX - $1000 <Just to be feasable>
Motor - $1000 for a OBD0 B16a swap
Mounts/linkage - $550 for hasports, $450 for HPC whatevertheyare
Motor Parts:
CTR Pistons and rings - $250
ITR cams - $450 from Acura
ITR Intake mani - $250
Fuel Pump - $100
Race Header With a Dump Tube - $400 for a good one
Single Fogger Wet kit - $300 on parts trader or $500 new for a Stang universal kit.
Lots of Love and Tuning. Priceless.
That's 4500.... Imagine 500 more... Slicks? Front Shocks? Coilovers? Z10's?
I'm feeling a stock suspensioned <read cut springs> mid/low 12 second CRX.
These prices are mostly New, Find used parts and really show this ******* some taillights.

I imagine that you stated in the bet that he can't mod his car, right? If so, you should have no problem if you follow what these guys say. I can't vouch for how many runs you can get in before the whole thing blows, but once is all you need, right?
alright guys....you're right he's not allowed to make any more mods other than the CAI we put together. One final question. Assuming i want to be able to drive the car more than twice down the track which would you suggest
LS/VTEC
B18C
B16A
or anything else you feel like sticking in there...
thanks guys
