5th gear clunking / grinding
on the way to school today.. i was driving well in 5th gear.. then all of a sudden it starts grinding.. like.. a light grind..
i then downshift to 4th.. and proceed to 5th again.. and it continues to make that light grind..
again.. to 4th.. and to 5th.. do this a few times.. the grinding stops.. then all of a sudden while im in 5th.. it starts making a pretty loud clunk clunk clunk sound.. so i downshift to 4th again... and stay in 4th.. cuz.. i dont wanna further screw up my tranny.. stay on 4th on the highway.. .. 65 @ 4k rpm.. for another 3 minutes.. and make it to school...
now im all bummed that i might have to buy a new tranny....
does anyone know wahts wrong with the gears?
im thinking synchros.. but.. not really 100% sure... this is for a lsd m2b4 tranny..
how much are synchros anywyas.. and how much do you think they would cost to replace...

Synchros are cheap. It just requires a complete overhaul and rebuild to install them.
Search around for a used tranny, unless you want to spend ~$1100 on a new/rebuilt one.

You are saying that you put it into 5th gear. Drove for a while and without touching the shifter it started to grind?
Or do you mean when you are putting it into gear you hear the grind?

my guess would be worn 5th synchro as you stated. if they are worn badly it allows the dog collar from the input shaft to slide across the synchro which causes the grinding.
synchros sell in sets so you going to be getting the 5th/reverse gear synchros. Buy a helms and do it yourself. if not i'll buy the phucked up tranny and rebuild it myself. let me know

thanks for the input.. and it grinds after im driving in 5th gear.. i dont touch the shifter.. and all of a sudden it goes chhkhkhkhkhkhkhkhkh.. but once in like.. a blue moon it goes clunk clunk clunk like something is really loose in the tranny..
when i hear this.. i immediately push in the clutch.. and put it in neutral.. but when i rev match to go into 5th again.. i can hear the grinding again.. so i downshift to 4th.. and maybe even 3rd just to be sure.. without letting the clutch go.. and put it back into 4th then 5th.. and it usually disappears.. if not.. i juts repeat...
i guess my best bet right now is to use gm syncrhomesh? then rebuild tranny later on when it gets hella bad? haha..
