Default Diy: Engine repair stand

Hy,

I'm planning to fab an engine reair stand somewhat like the one in the pic below. Any tips, plans for me?? Everybody keeps telling me to just buy one.

I wanna build this to exercise my welding skils.

Yeah with the high price of steel now, not forgetting you have to buy casters too, it'll cost more unless you can find it all surplus.

The real questions are: Do you want to build a stand or work on the engine? When do you want the engine done?

One nice thing about building the stand yourself is you can either make it height adjustable (which is what I would do if I was gonna take the time to make the stand), or you could atleast make it so it's tall enough for you. All the engine stands forsale are kinda short for me, and I always have to lean over and it ends up hurting my back. If you made it height adjustable, you could make it so you can raise it up to stand, or lower it to sit

dude buy the harbor frieght model then chuck the mount. Now make your own mount so you can hang the engine from the side instead of the back it makes working on the engine almost a pleasure.

I'd say do it but definately make it height adjustable like ferio said, because those things sit way to damn low, when it comes time for mine, I too will be making my own, but I will alse make some sort of device to keep the motor steady so i can install the clutch and tranny... without doing it on the ground or a bench, where it can fall.

So you want to practice your welding skills, and waste about $80 to do it? Why?

I'd suggest buying the stand and then looking into making a metal fab table or something else to work on your welding skills. In other words, if you make a table it will be cheaper than buying one. If you make a stand, you will pay more than to just buy it.

Or make a cart for your welding machine or something.

prob cost you more like people have said and would you trust your welds to hold your engine?!

i'd personally buy a half-decent one and practice making up something else, maybe a stand for a halogen light, a car-creeper?, anything really

exactly. . .I can find them brand new all day long for $30 in NJ.

The height adjustment thing sounds cool. Maybe you could buy one for cheap and modify it so it is perfect for you. . .
