Dose the Prelude gear box have hypoid gears in it??
Generally if a vehicle has a hypoid gear, it is only 5th gear. I couldn't really answer your question, but there is little use for hypoid gears if the transmission dosen't go beneath the passenger area.
Hypoid Gears are similar in their general form to bevel gears. However, Hypoid Gears operate on non-intersecting axes. Hypoid Gears have spiral teeth that are curved and oblique, with axes which may be at either right angles or otherwise.

Hypoid gears are like that found in old rear differentials they spread the load when meshing together by spreading the load between the end of the tooth before and the begining of the tooth to be engaged proper, and so on. They can handle far greater stresses, but they require EP (Extreme Pressure) type oil for lubrication. because this method of engagement forces the oil out from between the teeth..Consequences..no lube!!
But this type of oil is not good for the syncromesh gears used in most gearboxes, because syncro uses the action of forcing the oil out from between gears to spin the gears up for smooth engagement. If the oil wont get squezzed out..then you get rough gear changes. Well at least I think so!!
Thats why Im asking about Hypoid gears because my honda garage told me to put EP oil in my gear box.
