Castrol RS 10w60
Been on a tight budget lately.Here is the story.
Malaysian market:
Mobil-1 = crap
Shell = full syn only 15w60
I use Motul 300v 5W40 very nice and doesnt burn as much.But expensive.
Thinking of Castrol but they only one syn model here and it's the 10w60.
Will running "60" be too much to handle for a B16B?
Any pros or cons?

I wouldnt even run 60 weight in my worn out 289 V8. A engine would have to be seriously loose to use something that heavy. I would think it would blow up a honda engine.

I run 10W60 Agip racing blend full synthetic.
Been using it for 2 seasons now. Absolutely No consumption issues anymore. My car is Not a daily or cold weather driver, is always warmed up properly before any driving, the fluid levels are always checked before driving, is only used for track and autcross and the occasional jaunt on a Sunday.
I have not yet had a chance to test the oil but will when I swap plugs and at the same time check compression but that'll be a winter to spring project.

Just to toss up an experience...
I used 15-50M1 for just shy of 2k miles and thought the car felt like it was draggin its ***. The crossover into Vtack was slow and lacked the pop that it usually had. The caR was slow, Opie was rolling me hard
At the next oil change I switched back to 10-30 and the caR felt alive and willing to go.

Would think........... Look at a temp/viscosity chart. At elevated oil temps, a 50-60w will give you the same viscosity, if not thinner, as a 30-40w driving around town or on the highway, depending on the brand, etc.

I would think running double the recommend weight would have the same consequences as putting in too much oil. Oil pressure will be high, and all gaskets and seals will be strained. I know a kid in college who blew his engine up by putting too much oil in it. I know its possible. Not worth the risk IMO.

Guess mines a veritable time bomb since it also currently has the HAMP mini filter on it
And for heavens sake no OPG.
Gauges are on my list for this winters projects but not because I'm concerned that the oil will blow a gasket. Solely to keep tabs on the car at the track.
If though you're concerned and curious about the pressure of this oil in a B18C5 that is also virtually a track only car (albeit autocross), contact Rodney. He and I have been running the same weight and oil for just about the same length of time now but he has a dizzying array of gauges, lights, whizzers and dials to keep tabs on his hatchcrap.

Overfilling with twice as much oil is far, far worse than using "double" the weight - but oil viscosities are NOT linear!

Apparently people running 60 weight in b series engines are getting around 70psi under wot. Thats not too bad. So anyway, I'm wrong, your right.

All depends on the intended use and temp range the oil will see.
0w30 works fine for me, for now, but I would like to try the 10w40 if I could get my hands on it.

I use Castrol RS Syntec 10W-60 in the summer and on the track. For 3 years already... No oil burning. Castrol Syntec RS 0W-40 for the winter.
I think you don't understand the XXwYY numbers well. IMO, 10w30 and 10w60 oils are the same in normal streed use. The 10w60 one is however way better, because it can handle much higher temperatures than the 10w30 one.

you are right they are not the same, but they are close. remember that the oil still starts out as a 10weight oil and then is supposed to raise viscosity as the temp increases. i have tried everything from 5w30 castol nad mobil up to 15w50 mobil and still burn through everything like no ones business. i am going to try the vr1 20w50 soon.

Oil consumption, in my opinion, isn't necessarily a reason to switch to a higher viscosity oil. Certain oils seem more prone to consumption than others, but if the consumption is very excessive, there are most likely issues with the motor itself.
