94 Accord Auto Transmission performance question
Hi,
I just recently bought my first Honda, a 1994 Accord. There are a couple of things that the transmission does right now that I'm not sure are either normal/bad:
1. When I first put the car in drive after having it off for a while, it begins to move forward SLOWLY immediately, and after about a 2 second delay, it feels like it completely engages, and then goes forward at a normal pace.
2. When at highway speeds, in 4th, if I go to speed up quickly, the engine revs up about 300-500 rpm very breifly, and then drops down and feels like it "digs in". Is this it slipping...and a sign of doom?
The car only has 143000 KMs on it, and was driven by an old lady (I know, the same old story, but we bought it from the Honda Dealership that it was purchased at...and the guy showed us all of the service records in the computer from it's purchase date).
Thanks so much,
Macdian

I too have a '94 Accord Auto.
1. Mine does the same thing. Always has.
2. On the highway if it does that I think that's the torque converter kicking in. It may feel like a shift but it isn't. Also normal if that's the case.
I've put about 60,000 miles on my accord since I got it and haven't had any problems.

1st thing you might want to try is do a ATF Flush, a complete flush not just change the fluid.
if its a serious delay/rev and the flushing of the ATF doesnt help the problem; i hate to break it to ya but your tranny sounds like its coming to its demise the same way most honda auto trannies do. there are probably misc metal shavings clogging your ATF filter/screen (screen isnt replacable) and causing your clutch packs inside the tranny to operate with inadequate amounts of oil pressure causing the reving and delay. as days go buy the rev/delay will get longer but theres no telling when it will just crap out. ive been down this road but i was spraying a 75 wet shot of nitrous liberally (over a period of 2 yrs owned the car for 4 yrs) w/ a tranny oil cooler and rpm window switch to lessen the abuse on the tranny but soon i noticed the rev/lag, it progressively got worse and after maybe 15-20k the tranny took **** but then again the nitrous fast forwarded my trannies death. i have seen then converted to manual, it was a pain in the *** to do but well worth it. spraying out of the pocket is much more fun than brake torqing and spraying.
