MY CAR STINKS!
Ok here is the problem:
When i turn the A/C on it has a strange smell and when I put the aircontrol onto the setting where the air flows freely into the car it smells even more. This car was given to me and i think it might have been sitting for awhile, and i also think it went through the San Diego Fires. Is it possible that maybe the ashes or whatever caused the car smell this way? Anyways, i need some help so i can figure out how to fix this. Does airvents have some type of air filter? Any help would be great thanks!

On my WRX, the filter is under the glove box. I'm not sure where your in car air filter is. Might want to look around there. It's possible something got in the front air ducts near the wipers.
You can apray Lysol disinfectant apray through the intake system while the AC is on and that will help get rid of the smell - probably is just due to not turning the system off - or not running it enough at one time.
I think the owners manual or the helms says to run it for about 10 minutes on high per week.

condensation builds up in your vents and pools up. when the ac is not used the water stales up and gets the vents all musty (smells like a storm drain/musty *** basement). if it sits for a while, mold grows (you're probably at this point if it smells bad). i've heard to spray lysol in the fresh air intake and that'll kill the mold.

well you dont necessary have to take out the dash, you could just remove the glove box and work from there.

civic's dont have cabin air filtration. i say just run the a/c on full blast for about 20 min, and let some condensation build up. then turn off the a/c and run the fan for a while. it should dry up the condensation and take a bunch of crap with it when whe water evaporates.
the smell is bad if you always use the AC and never run the blower w/o the AC on. if you never use the AC, then water will never accumulate, and you will never get the nasty smell

Sorry sir you are misinformed. Air conditioning acts as a dehumidifier. You'd have bula problems if it humidied the **** outta your car.
I say use the Lysol method and/or "Pure Air" ventalation sanitizer.

Followed by blasting that heater. Don't forget to set your ventalation to where it blows through all the different settings while your using Lysol and/or Pure Air. Don't forget you gotta spray the stuff through your fresh air intake while your fresh air setting is set to open. It's location is the grill under your wipers.

where do u think the moisture goes? it condenses in the evaporater, leaving a water. this is where the mold/funky smell comes from. if you run the heater/blower w/o the a/c on, you'll dry out any moisture in the evaporator (under the dash, next to the blower) that may cause mold to grow
