Everyone will tell you- "It all matters on how much you want to spend" first of all figure out your price range, and in the mean time here are some options you can start thinking about. Some of my info might not be perfect but its a start....
Cheapest of cheap: you could go with a sohc zc non vtec for around $400. simple as it gets just drop it in. I think its around 120 hp. Right next to this is the dohc zc, its about 100 or more bucks and gives you about 130hp.
Cheap: If you want vtec you could get a D16z6, but your also gonna have to get a vtec controller. as they said its 124hp.
After the D series go B series.
The B series have more power but cost more. To do these swaps you need new engine mounts which are around 300$ and I think new axles $200 plus the tranny and ECU etc. They can run more than 3000 total.
First there is the B18 which is from the Integras.
You can either go vtec or with out. There are different models ranging from 130hp to 190hp. of course more money for more power.
Next, youve got your popular B16 swap which is from the civics. These engines run usually a little more than $1000, but start with 160hp.
Then is the B20 from the CR-V.
Although this engine has less hp- 127 it has 133 lb torqe.
Even more there is the H series.
These are the more rare of swaps, The H series come from the Prelude. There is a lot more modifications required for this. These have anywhere from 160-220hp.
Last there is the K series. This comes from the RSX.
This is probably the most rare swap, but soon to become more popular as the engines become more plentiful. Making 160hp, but also with more torque.
Now a popular modification is to use forced induction later on.
using a turbo or a super charger. This runs from anywhere from $700-$3000.
The D series (ZC is a D series) can be boosted a little bit with out too much trouble.
The B16 Already has a high compression ratio, and its recomend to rebuild internals if you want to boost.
The B18 is pretty much the same except for the lower end ones like the non Vtec LS has a 9.2 compression ratio and can be boosted pretty well.
The B20 series can be boosted but its recomend to rebuild the internals as well, due to lower quality forged sleaves.
The H and the K series, I havent seen any of these boosted in a crx, but it would be cool. The H series I belives needs internal work, and the K can be boosted with good fuel management.
I Currently Have an 88 CRX DX. I dont make a lot of money so im going the cheap route. Dohc ZC eventually boosted.
