Project: Stage 1 - ZC Buildup
Sup Everyone,
I am new here, first post as a matter of fact. I am a 4age convert after selling my mr2 and picking up a buddy's crx. Heres the stats, its an 89 si with a broke *** zc motor in it. HE has the original si sohc motor for me to put in it and of course I am going to rebuild the zc up a couple notches. I am thinking 105hp/liter at the flywheel. I am no stranger to high power NA motors, as my 4age was somewhere in that same vicinity and I dont think it will be too tough to get a ZC motor up there from what I have read baout it. My only problem is, I am not a crx-aholic (yet) and I dont know where to start. I dont know where the motor can make more power and so on and so on.
Heres what I have so far,
Im thinkin some 11:1 pistons, gimme some brands guys, and maybe some personal experience stories.
I have a port and polished head for it already, the valves are not installed, so I am thinking bigger valves? stiffer springs? again gimme some brands....
IT comes with DIY homeade CAI and thermal exhaust.
For sure cams/gears.... which ones do you guys recomend?
I am thinking those things alone can take me where I want to go.
This car is not rice, as a matter of fact I dont care about looks. the interior will soon be totally stripped with a couple chasis braces welded in the hatch. I am rolling on the stock si wheels with jamex suspension. I will be looking for some 15 inch racing wheels, preferably hayashi... anyone selling some?
Now for the final question, The zc motor he has now. my friend and I are thinking that the bearings are shot.....is htis common on zc's? what should i look for when I tear the motor down? and also, what mods have any of you diy'ers done to make sure the motor is getting plenty of cool oil? Filter relocation? bigger pan? external addt'l cooler? etc...
Thanks Guys and Gals *shrug*
All responses are appreciated.

If those are your goals I would say sell the P/P ZC head and swap in that B16A its only like 1200 for compleate change over + like 400 for the mounts this engine has much better aftermarket support and that 105 hp per liter figure you wanted with I/H/E you got the 105 per liter. And yes the ZC are known to spin bearings when you rev them to high I would only goto 7300k onn this engine myself while a stock B16A you can take to 8500k and properly built around 10K. Just my thoughts if you did'nt have to rebuild that ZC I would say turbo it but after the rebuld cost you will be around the cost for a B16a
i have the following for my ZC build-up:
set of Individual Throttle Bodies( mmm four throttle bodies...)
HKS Cams/Camgears(street-able)
Japanese ZC N-1 Spec ECU for EF-7
no motor yet, just got the car: worlds best honda, the original Honda Civic, 1977 CVCC!!! yeah baby!!! doing a ZC/88-89 Teg swap in it. it'll be fast, oh yes, it WILL be fast...hehehehehee.... MUAA-HAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAA!!!!

ok I thought about the b16 but here is the deal, i get both motors with it. I can rebuild the zc for virtually free. I mean not a performance rebuild but for sure a clean rebuild. and the zc is done. already have the ecu and harness. So it just seemed easier, this car is not for drag racing MOSTLY
I was just trying to go with what I had and save some cash.
well could i get anyone to tell me some good high comp pistons anywho?
I def appreciate the advice, and since i ddi think it was more than that I will check into it some more...
thanks guys
Greg
ps. ITB's are cool as ****, that was my next step on the 4ag i built.

From what I've seen, most zc motors in decent running condition dyno at about 115-120hp to the wheels with the stock dohc zc (or similar) header and a zc or teg ecu. With some Web or Clay Smith regrinds (I've heard Crower and JG can make regrinds for the zc also), shave the head a little to raise compression and increase quench, a good header like the DC 4-2-1, free flowing exhaust, and a short ram intake with a cold air "bathtub" or "ice box". Some dyno time with a pair of cam gears, and you should be able to get close to 100hp per liter which is about 135hp at the wheels. Doing much more than these mods would be a waste of money with the other options available - like turbo or b16a.
You really don't need to do any porting to the zc head, the only thing porting will do is kill air velocity and bottom end power. It flows more than enough air stock, unless your building the motor for turbo or a serious n/a race motor, although a little clean up work probably wouldn't hurt. Same with the valves, they are already oversized for a 1.6 liter with a 75mm bore, if you go any bigger flow will likely decrease because of valve shrouding problems. The stock valve springs are probably ok up to 7500 rpm with most moderate aftermarket cam grinds. That's about the highest you would want to rev the zc due to the not so great rod/stroke ratio.
