how bad? just some "whirring" or grind/clunking

1000 miles is a ways. If it's bad enough for you to worry about... it may be bad enough not to take the trip.

Yes it is, I had one that siezed up while I was doing 75mph in the left lane and it put me off to the right side of the road faster that anyone can swerve. Front passenger tire was locked and I had only been driving for 3 hours that day. I wouldn't push it. A locked bearing can break hubs, and possibly flipped a vehicle since you really have no control. Do what you want just be know that when you pass a semi and it locks and you fly off the right side of the road and look put to see Peterbilt in ALL YOUR MIRRORS you will wish that you had gotten it replaced. And then when you pay the $350 tow bill you'll be more than upset.

That was my personal experience do what you want but be safe and have it changed. When mine let go I did both front ones that way I know I have good bearings cause if the one let go the other one probably isn't far behind. You don't want to hurt yourself or friend and lastly loose your car

yeah dude 1000 miles is a pretty decent ride with a busted bearing you might as well just fix it in the driveway or get it fixed out by him real quick and not worry about anything if you do decide to drive on it good luck man

Just a suggestion but I had a rear bearing go bad on my dx, I was able to grab an entire hub off a junk lx with 120k for $25. Much easier to swap the whole hub than to remove hub, press out bearing, press in new. Course I dont have a press so thats why it was easier for me....just a suggestion.

Edit : I also drove on my bad bearing, loud *** humming and all for about a month, it got a real nice pitch to it right before 80mph, even my stereo couldnt drown it out.
