Your tranny computer uses the D4 lamp like a check-engine light. Search around for a procedure for reading check-engine-light codes. I don't have a '94, but there's probably a wire somewhere that you jumper with a paperclip & watch the lights flash.

Do that: the D4 light will flash a code, while the engine light will (maybe) flash it's own code. Those codes can narrow down the trouble, but it doesn't usually say exactly what PART is bad. You'll still have to check some things out. Got a multi-meter & some tools?

if the speedo doesnt work it probably the VSS (Vehicle speed sensor) pain in the *** to replace and not so cheap either the one for my 5-speed was like 120

sounds like your VSS is bad like 90accorddx said. it actually really isn't that hard to replace. it sits right on top of your tranny, just take your intake pipe off and you can get a socket onto it. make sure you use a deep welled socket and unplug the harness from it.

that exact same thing happened to me minutes before i ran out of anti-freeze due to a leak in the system. check your coolant (in the radiator when it's cool - not in the overflow)
