Default 168k on 96 lx automatic?

I thinking of buying a 96 lx 4dr blk from my dads coworkers soninlaw. I havent seen the car yet. Do you think the tranny (on average) should still be good? how far do autos normaly go. I dont want to buy it then loose the tranny.(this would be my first auto in 14 years).he said the tranny was recently serviced.
He told my dad it is a lx. but it has a stock sun roof and a stock cd player. Is this possible or do you think it is an ex?(i cant see the car for a few days)

I can get it for $3,000. Is that a good price for this car?

I currently have 133K miles on my Auto 96 Accord LX coupe. I had to replace the tranny @ 122K miles. It may have last longer if I treated it better. I use to run the hell out of it when it was newer. I think the downshifting to 3rd while doing 70mph on freeway wasn't good for its longevity. That was back in my street racing days. I'm all grown up now but I still love my Accord.

It could be a LX "special edition" because the LX doesn't come with a sunroof. $3000 sounds about right. Check online for the N.A.D.A/Bluebook value. Good luck.

I have 112K on my 98 auto.... But its on its last leg. I supposed it didnt help when i put it in neutral and threw it in drive at redline.

It woulda lasted alot longer... i would say that if it has been maintained, go for it. I know some1 who changed thefluid every 15K miles on a dodge and has over400K on it. I dont know how tho considering its a dodge... that tells you something about changin the fluid.

As for the price, it is ok. go for it

Depends on how well it has been taken care of initially - My Dad sold me his 84 LX Auto (I know, different generation) with 30,000, I drove it until it had 286,000 on it, and sold it to a friend who still drives it today - has over 325,000 on it and runs strong.

BUT, I would at least have the system inspected and flushed.

i'd see at what mileage he changed the tranny fluid. i have 172k on my 95lx (which does have a moonroof - after market though - no LX's come with a stock moonroof - but you can install them like i did at 52K). If he didn't swap out his tranny fluid frequently, if you try to flush it it'll rip the tranny apart - so i'd check on that.

i know this is sheer blasphemy in this forum, and i love my car and plan on driving it until at least 250k -- but i think that $3000 for any car with that high of miles is a huge risk. but if you're going to take that risk - you couldn't pick a better car to do it with.

Wow thanks for all the good replys. I figure then i should beable to get another 50k on the tranny.(to me thats 18months) so ill check into the price of a rebuild as well or if i can convert to 5spd.
my 89 accord lxi 5spd has 306,000 on it but i know the rings and bearings are shot.

'87 LX auto, 308,000 miles, 100% original never-been-touched auto tranny and still shifting absolutely perfect. Amazing what regular fluid changes will do for a tranny in the long run!
