Default Whistling/squealing noise from brakes...

...well I think it's coming from my brakes anyways.

Been noticing this kinda high pitched whistling/squealing noise coming from the car at speeds over about 15-20mph. It almost sounds like brakes squealing like when you stop but it's not nearly as loud. In all gears and when accelerating or decelerating (w/o brakes applied) but when I apply the brakes it stops immediately. I can only hear it if I'm close to something, like say a guardrail, that the noise can bounce off of.

I'd thought maybe something was stuck in the brake pad (a small pebble maybe) but the pads were off last weekend and it's still doing it. I'd also thought maybe it was an ATS related noise (no it's not gear whine) but I don't think that'd stop when the brakes were applied. Erik95LS thinks it may be a heatshield rubbing something but I didn't notice them contacting anything when I was messing w/ the brakes last week. Could this be a wheel bearing going bad? I've always thought that would be more of a humming noise and there doesn't seem to be any play in the wheels.

Anyways, any ideas???? TIA homies

well its definatly not the ATS, as my car makes the sound too and I don't have one. It could be a wheel bearing. I hadn't thought about that. We'll have to do some searching on both our cars and see what we can find. Anyone else have any ideas?

If it stops when you touch the brakes, it's brakes 90% of the time.

I'd try a few things like this...

-- Touch the e-brake. does the whistle stop? Probably not, if it was the rears you would probably be able to tell the difference.

-- Touch the brake pedal while accelerating (keep accelerating). Does the whistle stop? Gotta be brakes. If not-- could be something rubbing when the front end squats (doubt it) or wheel bearing I guess. Bearings sorta sound unique to me they're a lower-frequency whirring than brakes make.

-- Still not sure if it's the brakes? Try a brake bed-in procedure (5 60-0 stops) to heat 'em up and then see if the whistle is there. If it goes away when hot, great. If it comes back, it was probably your brakes.

-- Spin a wheel while it's off the ground. You will probably hear something from the noisy component.

I doubt it's the wear indicator (you had the brakes off recently?)... plus that whine is the charateristic "need new brakes" sound.

Definitely not the wear indicator as the pads have lots of life left. But it does kinda sound like that noise just a lot less intense, if you have the radio up loud you wouldn't notice it. I may try the bed-in procedure again and see if that changes anything. Thanks for the tips

Oh yeah, pads are Axxis Ultimates.

I have the same problem in my hachi. Same Axxis pads. I think my problem is that the pad is not seated properly and it rubs. Fitment on Axxis pads suck, I think.

The noise is there at all times, not just when cold. They used to never do it, oh well Haha it's bad enough that my wife noticed it yesterday

Oh well, I'll just turn the radio up

So what've you been listening to lately?

I've been digging on:

Spray your rotors down with some WD-40.

But really, did any/all of you put brake lube between the caliper and pad, or between the piston(s) and pad? I almost never do, but most street pads come with a little tube of it. Some come with a little pad diaper which might try to dampen those high-frequency squeals (not sure).

I sure hope thats old face to face and not new face to face.

I think it coudl just be the axxis's fitment as mine never really did fir very well...on the rears with my old brakes i actually had to grind down the tabs on either side just a little bit to work, although those made no noise. On the R brakes, however they do.

it could be that break dust has gunked up the piston, or pistons if they are aftermarket, and that they are binding... Try jacking up the car, give the wheel a good spin... does it turn a good bit, or stop damn quick? If it stop quick you have a pad that is always engaging the rotor. In that case, try loosening the bleeding screw... if you get a surge out of it, then it a hydrolic problem. What about the pads? is the inner or outer worn more? Or is the outer edge worn less than the inner? Those can be signs that you have a stuck piston, or improper hardware mounting, respectevly. Hope that helps.

I have the same thing happening and its my brake retainers on the calipers they end up rubbing on the rotors... then again i have a modifed ITR brake setup on a gs-r but it wouldn't hurt to check your retainers.

(and it goes away when i brake)

And i also have the Cobalt GTS pads and i can tell the difference in the two sounds and the pads only make sound when you apply the brake.
