Default Changed timing belt and clutch. Now it will not start.

Have a 97 Civic (non-Vtec).
I just got done changing the timing belt, water pump, plugs, cv-joints and a clutch kit. Now after I put it all back together it will not start.

I have spark and gas and recheck the timing belt to make sure the crank and pulley are set corect (TDC on #1).

I thought it might be 180 off, but i triple check that too.

When I try to start it the engine seem to be spinning faster that it ususally does. Kind of like when there is not compressoin.

Please help.

Thanks.

J

this one's a long shot, but you don't have the camshaft off 180 do you?

as long as you have the crank at tdc and there is a mark on the crank that will match too the block and have the cam gear with the up mark facing up with the marks on the side level with the cyl head you should be fine with timming. are you sure you have the plug wires in the right order

Thanks all for your help. Well I checked the timing agian and once again #1 was on TDC and markings were aligned. Gas was getting to the engine and spark was shocking. I tried to start it again and it did some sputtering so I kept trying but when the gas pedal all the way down. ...well after a couple times it started.

Now why would it do this? Is is running great now. The cluch i much softer that the stock honda one, but feels good. Do you think the computer was diconnected too long? 5-6 days?

Thanks again guys.

Hi. I'm having a similar situation after changing the timing belt on my 91 Civic. I haven't tried a lot to crank it b/c it sounds like no compression as well. Did you have to turn it over a lot before you got it to crank? I'm wondering if the ECM has to retune itself. Thanks.

Yes, I cranked it 3 or 4 times for a couple of minutes. I also had to hold the gas to the floor. Runs great now. Not sure why it acted that way other than something to do with the reset of the brain.

Good luck man.
