Default ****... how do i fix this suspension i f'd up?

Well I was installing my springs today and this is what happened...

If you cant tell, that is a jacked up spring. When i was loosening one of the compressors, it slipped off, leaving the other one by its lonesome. The compressor wont fit back over the spring, since it is jammed up into the top.

shi7. Anyone know how i can fix this?

its stuck like that until tomorrow morning.

Ok so to clear things up. Theres only 1 compressor on the spring right now, and from the looks of it the main shaft of the compressor is bent correct? First remove the top hat from the shock and take the spring out and put it on the floor. With a lotta strength, you can loosen the compressor all the way until the main shaft is out of threads. Keep going and the main compressor shaft will disconnect from the bottom bracket of the compressor and then just wiggle the brackets out of the spring.

yeah the pic sucks, but thats all we could get.

The compressor is straight. One popped off and the one that is left is compressing only one side of the spring, forcing the other part to apply a lot of pressure on the top hat.

any ideas?

Impact the spring hat off, remove the spring, and use the impact to loosen the spring compressor.

An air gun. Could be electric too.

Dude, dont be a wuss... Just take off the tophat. Use like a small bathroom garbage can (square not circle), and use it to catch the tophat. I'm sure with one side of the spring compressed still, the pressure will not be that great.

Why don't you try and get the other compressor to "compress" the other side of the spring to releave some tension on the compressor holding the spring now? then untighten both of them off, only a few turns at a time

It looks like you were trying to get the spring compressor off, but you untightened one all the way instead of taking turns and letting the tension off of the spring somewhat uniformally.

Don't try and untighten the compressor on there now, you may hurt yourself. Just grab the other compressor and try and compress whatever part of the spring you can grab onto, just enough so that the compressor still on there isn't doing all the work... then untighten both of them EVENLY, a few turns each at a time.

Good luck.

thanks. i am a n00b at installs and I wanted to do this myself.

I would take the tophat off, but one of the nuts is stuck from the pressure... ooo...

I am going to try to compress the bottom part of the spring where i can fit the compressor and take off the hat.

alexander you are right. that is what i did.

Compress the bottom (as much as you can grab) of the spring on the other side, when you have everything clamped down and POSITIVE the spring is secure, undo the top hat, slide the spring off and uncompress both sides evenly (use your judgement). Then, start over. It took me two afternoons to do my front and rear suspension, the first spring/shock was the hardest and I took my sweet *** time with everything. Try and do the same, don't rush your suspension.

Also make sure you are using a torque wrench on ALL of the suspension bolts. You don't want to overtighten anything, or find out in 6 months that something came loose.

Good luck again, please be cautious and take your time.

Eeven better would be if he kept screwing around with it with the improper tools some more, and seriously injured himself.

You sir, are an idiot.

I'm all for D.I.Y. if you have the proper tools and half a clue what the hell you are doing.

I completed the project without taking it to a shop. Thank you to everyone but b16b.
