4 speed eats it in every way except gas consumption. I (had) a 4 speed in my STD and for city driving the gas milage is great. But the highway milage isn't so good because of the high RPMs (around 3200 for 55MPH!).
So 4 speed isn't good for anything except village driving, and even then only for the gas milage. If you want a car that's good on gas get a DX tranny and put it on the STD engine. Best of everything. If you want performance get the 5spd Si tranny.
If you plan on having the STD as your daily driver then keep the 4spd tranny. There's nothing technically wrong with it... but you'll see that 2nd gear is a waste of time in that tranny. And 4th doesn't really cut it for highway driving in america where (at least in New York) the average highway speed is 65-75 MPH.
I would still have the 4spd tranny if my brother didn't blow it up. J/K it wasn't really his fault but it went pop so he graciously gave me the old 5spd out of his CRX DX. I love it, it gives the gas milage i need but with a good low end performance boost. I assume an Si would be even better for the performance end of it, but then the final drive of those trannys are not so great for highway gas.

the std tranny has the worst acceleration....
SI or ZC tannys are the best for acceleration as far as d-motors are concerned..

my 4 speed worked really good well taking off, i beat my friends 91 Crx Si every time but in a longer run he would win. on a 1/4 mile all you need is 1st and 2nd, 3rd pretty much does nothing, 1st gets you to 32 mph before needing to shift and 2nd is 75mph, but like they said on freeways it suck really bad cuz you really dont have any power and it eats up gas
Theres no sentence that combines 4spd tranny and performance unless speaking of its lack thereof.
If that car is gonna go fast someday, an Si or a ZC is the only way its gonna get there. Even for a daily driver the Si isn't so bad, unless your commuting everyday and can't stay near the speed limit. Also, there's the option of a hybrid tranny, many sell right here in our seller forum. Si trannys with longer final gears to make highway speeds alittle more bearable. But to directly answer your question, 2 identical cars, with identical drivers, under absolute identical situations, the Si will always surpass the DX, and the DX will surpass the HF which will go home very slowly and cry to its mommy. - Darrell
