Whats the differance between a B16 tranny with LSD and a type r tranny? Which one would be better for my gsr?

which b16 tranny is it? the gearing may be a little shorter on the type r, but depending on which tranny you're talking about, there's no difference
specnically speaking
do some searches and you should find everything you need

if i remember correctly the b16 tranny for the most part has the same gears as an itr tranny with just different final drives

you can put lsd on any tranny

well both can be really good trannys the type r would be a good tranny but u can find b16s that are close ratios but you need to decide how streetable u want it i have a s1 tranny and its tight as hell kinda a pain on the freeway but sick at the track id go type r personally

I know the itr tranny had something better than the B16. I think the itr has better synchros...

Since you already have a gsr tranny wouldnt upgrading to a 4.7 FD give you ratios similar to the itr? It might be a little cheaper as well

these trannys are basically the same if you have a b16a with lsd, the itr has better syncros and
is beefed up a little more in the inside.

It depends on which ITR tranny you're talking about.

1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, R, Final Drive

B16a2 S4C:
3.230 2.105 1.458 1.107 0.848 3.000 4.400

USDM B18C1 Y80
3.230 1.900 1.360 1.034 0.787 3.000 4.400

USDM B18C5 S80 w/LSD
3.230 2.105 1.458 1.107 0.848 3.000 4.400

JDM B18C Spec-R S80 w/LSD
3.230 2.105 1.458 1.034 0.787 3.000 4.785

JDM S80 > USDM S80 > Y80 > S4C

ya honestly it takes forever to go anywhere far if you have a b16 tranny, i have had to drive behind 2 of my buddys for like 5 hours from portland to seattle and im cruising along at like 2500 rpms with my LS tranny and they are trying to stay out of vtec.

B16 and USDM ITR tranny's with a 4.4 FD are not THAT bad for highway driving. Throttle position matters more as far as fuel consumption.

I wouldn't mate a low revving motor to the ITR tranny or anything, but if you drive a gsr already, then the itr/b16 tranny is a good upgrade for N/A or even low boost.

I can see the replies already: "NO NO NO ITR TRANNY IS BAD FOR BOOST"
F-off, would you??

haha sorry. Just my 2c.

EDIT: Didn't answer your original question, woops...

yeah... exactly. Personally I'm a fan of the GS-R trans... the only downfall is no LSD

Yes, I know 3rd, 4th and 5th gears are made of a stronger composite, and i believe the syncros are stronger too.

I have the jdm itr trans with the 4.7fd and i enjoy it! The other thing you have to realize is the jdm itr trans has the same 4th and 5th gear ratio as the gsr trans but the difference lying in the 4.7fd. But the jdm itr has a shorter 1-3 & the 4.7fd. Now if you had a gsr trans and installed a jdm itr 4.7fd you would have the same exact gear ratio in 4th + 5th as the jdm itr trans. Just something to think about, plus i love having lsd......

See what i mean? You will have a much shorter 1-3 going with the jdm itr trans but a tolerable cruising gear. At 80mph your at 4300+ rpms almost in vtec. I plan on moving my vtec crossover a bit higher when it gets tuned.

why the hell do you have vtec crossover set at 4500ish rpm? Perhaps it's cause I don't have a gsr, but what is it set at stock? 5500?

Stock vtec engagement is 4400, and it's a tiny bit load sensitive.

Quoted from http://members.lycos.nl/hendrik/honda/vtecinfo.htm

With the stock B16 engine this is little to be gained from changing the cam switch point - the ECU does a much better job than a VTEC controller because it can compare the torque curves of each cam and switch where they overlap. If you need a VTEC controller then it will be evident from a jump (up or down) in the torque curve when the cams switch. This may be difficult to judge even from a dyno because the cams should switch at different speeds with different engine loads, but a dyno print out would be the way to check.

But that's neither here nor there, and definitely off topic...
