Default Mini Me Questions - Need a lil' help from ya junkies out there.

Hey what's up everyone on Honda-tech?

Here's what happened. I purchased an d16A6 engine for my CRX DX but after taking it apart, I found the head to be cracked. What better excuse to get a VTEC head? I have been researching the mini-me conversion and I'm limited to the two obvious choices of the d16Z6 head or d16Y8 head. If I use the d16Z6 head, it will be cheaper, requires a lil modification t the distributor to make it fit, and it's drastically cheaper then the d16Y8. But the Y8, It has a better intake manifold (I know it can fit the Z6) but I can get it at a pretty good price shipped and its pretty much a bolt on affair. But if I run the A6 pistons in there with the d16y8 head, I'll have to ditch the d16A6 pistons and get some lower compression ones to knock the compression ratio down a bit.

Here are some questions though:

Whats the benefit of choosing the d16Y8 over the d16Z6?
Whats better and more practically used...OBD-I (d16Z6) or OBD-II (d16Y8)?
Which has the better cam profiles if I were to toss a performance cam in it?
What are the normal average prices everyone has picked them up for in SO CAL?
Which one is the better bang for the buck (when coming to Mini me swaps)?

I've been looking at Ebay and on Honda-tech for the Engine Heads. For a complete d16Y8 swap (OBD-II, Distributor, IM, TB, ECU, Head) for around $250-300 w/o shipping. But, I have seen the d16Z6 (OBD-I, Distributor, IM, TB, ECU, Head) swap go for like $100-$150. I'm stuck debating over it. I know the Z6 would net lower Compression Ratio for the d16A6 block. I've been debating of doing the full engine swap but I don't have the cash atm so I am sticking with the mini me. So it's not really an option at the moment. (but perhaps in the future)

Oh also, I still have to purchase the OBD-0 to OBD-1/2 Conversion kits either off Boomslang.us or JKOBDConversionharness.com.

Your help and comments are greatly appreciated.

higher compression is a good thing.

I personally like Z6 heads, but if you port a Y8 head, it is the better one

Sweet ok. However, to answer my question, which one is more beneficial? I would just get the Z6 head if in fact it does flow better w/ a Y8 Manifold/fuel rail.

The Z6 flows better, but I have lost the graph that charts the comparison between the two.

Believe you can as long as you change the injectors, but don't quote me on that. It should be the same after that.

Thanks alot. It helped somewhat but I am still trying to find the answer to the OBD-I and D16Y8 question. I'm assuming that it will work, however, I just want an honest second opinion. I appreciate all the replies!

Yes, you can use the p28 (OBD1) ecu for the Y8; however, it does not have optimum VTEC activation for the Y8 head.
