Default Any Snow Chain / Tire Chain recommendations?

Hello,

I'll be driving my 1998 Acura GSR across country around Nov 1st. Just in time for winter conditions, whee!!

I was wondering if anyone had any recomendations for snow chain/tire chains.

Does anyone have a pref as far as chains vs. cable types? I'm assuming cables are smoother riding, but I really don't want to take any chances..

My tire size is 205/50/15 and the car is at stock height if that helps anyone.

I've looked at chains by these guys:

and they look pretty good.

Any ideas/suggestions would be helpful. If you have any general winter driving tips that would be cool too. I'm just a naive California kid moving to Chicago(i'll miss the Cali-mex that's for sure...god, give me a burrito with black beans and guacamole and i'll marry you..)

thanks,

-J

doubt that you really need chains or anything. Just take it easy, and don't try to trounce on the gas and you should be fine. Leave plenty of space between you and the car in front of you, and ya should be fine. Trust me. I've lived in Chi-town my whole life, no problems. Even had a car with an oppen diff for two winters. Managed just fine. Only got stuck once. Plus, chains and such are illegaa in the state of IL, just to let you know.

hehe, Cali kid afraid of some snow . Many states have banned chains and cables because they **** up ther roads. Just make sure you have some good all-season tires and you'll be fine. FWD kicks *** in slippery conditions.

Local laws will apply to whether or not chains (or studded tires) are legal. Check first.

Any reason you have for not wanting a straight winter tire? Were you hoping to run Azenis in Chicago in January and just throw chains on them? It sounds like an interesting idea, but I think snow tires might be a better choice.

I believe that you are making more out of the move to chicago than you should be. The city is pretty good about making sure that the streets are clear and non-icy. I'd be more worried about your *** and slipping on the sidewalks, which aren't nearly as well kept. Get some spikes for your shoes and a nice WARM jacket. You should be good to go. btw, hit me up, I am just north of chi-town and am always looking for new teg owners to hang out with.

Thanks for the responses. Maybe I should have been a bit more clear:

-The snow chains/cables would be for my trip *across* the country(going through Colorado etc..) around the beginning of Nov. I would be sticking to the main highways(mainly 80-East). I might also be making a trip to Toronto(Beastie Boys concert, yeaah!)

I wouldn't use them for daily excursions through town once i got to chi-town.

-I didn't mention this before, but i might as well add this question: Are all-season tires ok in winter in Chicago or other midwest towns? I don't really have the cash for a seperate set of Winter tires.

I was looking at the Toyo Proxes 4 which are highly rated all-season tires:

thanks again for your time and assistance,

-J

you should be more than fine with all season tires...most major highways are usually well maintained and salted when the snow comes.....but then again snow prolly wont come for another 4 months or so...now driving up to canada...i have no clue

lol
you should be fine on all seasons..for your first winter anyways..cause summer destroys all seasons, then they suck in winter after your first summer.
toronto is actually pretty nice, it should be fine when you come up, im about 4h north west of TO and snow is on and off until like mid dec when it really hits.

if i were you, since it sounds like you have a budget, go with the all seasons, but then id HIGHLY suggest saving for some winter tires. then just use your all seasons for summer..

good luck with your trip

dont be affraid..its nice up here
