How do you value (set a price) on a not-so-common race car ??
With certain cars and classes you pretty much have an idea what a car should cost or what your should ask given similar cars in the same class.
We all know what a decent H1 or H4 car should cost. Prices on an ITS/ITA/IT.....whatever are pretty similar in regards to prep levels.
My dilema is that I have turned what was pretty much a rare street car (1988 BMW M5) into a track/race car that is not raced much at all (it would be classed in ITE in SCCA and some Prepped class in BMWCCA).
The car itself is not a common model to build a race car with (like say an E30 or a 944).
The car has never been raced and has had a ton of money dumped into it.
A comparable street car (M5) runs between 8-13K.
The car cannot be converted back to street car status so it's an expensive track day car or a race car.
No expense was ever spared on the car. I easily have 50K into it. Engine and gearbox were totally rebuilt 7K ago and no expense was spared. Car had a complete 6K paint job.
Equipment also was installed at a "no expense" spared type deal (Quaiffe, GC race suspension, Movit/Porsche brakes, World CHallenge spec cage).
Car offers good performance with 300 hp and 3100 pounds.
But again my audience is limited to someone who really likes a full blown M5 race car (most people want an M3) and wants to race it knowing it's not going to beat ITE cars with 500+ hp or ex-World Challenge spec E36's in BMWCCA.
The track day crowd likely isn't looking for the level of prep this car offers (1000 pound springs, 3 way adjustable race dampers, etc...)
So I am open to advice if it's even worth it to put it on the market.
I have a 10K street car with 40K in it and I won't take less than 20K or thereabouts. Car comes with records, has never been raced or wrecked.
Is this car saleable or desirable.
Open to opinions.
AND NO THIS IS NOT A SALE ADD. The car won't be for sale until next year if at all.

Gonna be a VERY tough sell, but it seems you already know what you're getting in to.Obvious issues with such a car:
1. Repairs = $$$
2. Will it be competitive anywhere?
Put it up for sale and just wait, that's the best you can do...
here's my take on it (and, as usual, stating the painfully obvious):
since a car is only ever worth what someone wants to pay for it, it seems that the answer is simple.
you don't want to sell it for less than $20k, and you've invested $50k in it. I say, put an ad for $25k (a little negotiation room) and see what kind of responses you get.
Either it sells and you have what you wanted, or it doesn't and you still have your cool car.
Remember that you won't lose any money on the car until you actually sell it.

That's a joke right?
Scott, who's grudgingly accepted the idea that every dollar spent on a race car is LOST the instant it's spent...the "salvage value" on a race car is about 25 cents on the dollar....

LOL... you can't wait for and upturn in the market. I would tend to say: You won't know how much money you've lost until you sell it.

Start in the high 20's and work down from there. IMO

Would you know of anyone who needs a rear self-leveling system?
I have a complete system for sale.

Man, that thing is a beast. I drove Chris Coulter's M5 around the track and it was a friggin hoot, and yours is even better prepped. Stupid torque and handles nicely. Good luck w/ the possible sale.
Anyone want a '97 Turbo Diesel Dodge Ram 2500? Ping me.

Got any more info (specs, pics, etc) on this car? A guy who is a regular at our local lapping events recently purchased an ex World Challenge 3 series, but he's a Bimmer nut (owns a Dinan M3, Dinan prepped 5 series, Dinan prepped X5, ex World Challenge 3 series and a Mini Cooper S (not a "real" Bimmer though, right?). . . I could pass the info along to him if you wish.

My car has about 30 hp on Coulter's car. Chris has a GC suspension setup without the race dampers and I think his brakes are 750 brakes.
Mostly run 1:27's at Summit, though I did dip into the 26's once (or my HotLap was playing games).
Here is some info on the car:
http://www.flatoutracing.net/race_cars/m5.asp
http://hstrial-jkofod.homestea....html (much more detail and more general M5 info)
Again it's not yet for sale but I will talk with interested parties.

these are the kind of people who are going to be your potential market.. someone will to spend that extra money just to have the car and will worry about making it competitive later..
it CAN be done.. everyone is right though.. put an ad out for mid 20's and see where it goes.. we did the same thing for the WC ITR and ended up doing very well.. it just took awhile..

semantics... the way I look at it, I purchased a car, some parts and services. I still have the car, the parts, and the fruits of the services. I have lost no money. When I sell the car for half or less than I put in it, then I will have lost money. If I never sell the car, I haven't lost anything.
hey, one needs to find SOME way to not go jump off a bridge whenever one looks at how much $$$ gets sunk into our drug.
besides, you never know, you may one day become a celebrity, at which point your race car could be worth much dinero hombre.
see, it's just a matter of perspective.
S. going back to take another hit off the bong.
