Not happy about the SCCA's decision...

Sounds like they aren't discontinuing it so much as transferring it to another sanctioning body (Rally America). This is probably the best thing to do considering how risky rally is from a liability standpoint. That way if some ******* gets hurt and decides to sue, the whole SCCA doesn't go down the crapper.

That is what insurance is for, it protects the SCCA from liability. The SCCA has never been at risk of "going down the crapper" because the events have always been insured.
Some (like me) would argue the SCCA is already in the crapper. SCCA does nothing for me now that rally is gone, I doubt I'll continue my membership anymore.
I'd much prefer to run ICSCC or NASA for road racing, and the autocross events I can take or leave. Without rally SCCA is nothing to me.

True, but the SCCA still has to pay the premium. Anyway, we have an interview scheduled with the SCCA.

Insurance is not what might be killing SCCA Rally. People signing waivers and knowingly engaging in an inherently dangerous activity but later suing when they get hurt is what kills it. Especially when the driver gets killed and the family who may not understand motorsports or the risks (or for some getting greedy) decide to sue. Insurance companies are a business and if you accept $5,000 premium to insure an event and pay $1 million to settle a claim or satisfy a judgment, the math doesn't work. Of course that is why you will NEVER see something like the Nurburgring "public" track in this country.

I was just clarifying that at no point was the SCCA at risk of being bankrupted by someone bringing a lawsuit after an accident at a Rally event. That sort of thinking is just assinine and has nothing to do with the issues.

True, insurance can protect them, but what if they can't simply get any at a reasonable cost? Would participants be willing to pay $1000 entry fees? I'm looking forward to our talk later this week. Plus I just got a release stating that Steve Johnson (SCCA pres) will be on Wind Tunnel tonight. I just hope it's not on opposite Law & Order.

Having been both race chair and assistant race chair for my region's SCCA club racing you have to remember the insurance coverage is not a bottomless pit of "indemnity" (coverage). Although SCCA's insurance, Weisenburg provides very good coverage for the price you get. One of the criticisms I have heard about NASA is their insurance package is not as good. Whether that is true I don't know. To say litigation can't put a damper on a sport or an industry is naive. Look at the small private plane manufacturing industry. It was pretty much killed for years in the 1980s by lawsuits and production went down to just about nil. Then Congress passed the Aviation Revitalization Act of 1994 so that manufacturers like Cessna could actually afford to purchase products liability insurance and insurance companies could underwrite the insurance. SCCA national is not a bottomless pit of assets either. All you have to do is read your Sportcar magazine to know that. Whether liability exposure has anything to do with the decision on Rally I guess Steve J. and the SCCA Board knows more about it. I am a lawyer that handles "commercial" litigation where sometimes horrific injuries occur. When you get someone who is a brain injured, and has large medical bills every year with a significant loss of income stream for the rest of their life and well, it can add up past the liability coverage. Of course entrants sign waivers but lawsuits still get filed sometimes anyway. A Race Chair has to acknowledge that fact in his head in order to be pragmatic about the risks. If not you are whistling in the dark. I acknowledged that risk and as a volunteer not making a dime on the event have agreed to be race chair. But then just driving down the road everyday to work you can be in a wreck and end up with the same large exposure.

i totally disagree with the lawsuit part. While i don't think SCCA is at risk of being bankrupted, I would guess them discontinuing Pro Rally has everything to do with insurance liability and "possible" lawsuits. Yes they have insurance for it, but if it becomes too expensive to insure an event and at least break even, what's the point of running it? I think insurance coverage for these events is why SCCA is stepping back. And I can totally understand that decision. People will sue for any reason they can think of in this country. It's quite sad.

Doh, my bad. Okay, would you pay double that per event? Triple? We have an interview with the SCCA scheduled for tomorrow. Should be interesting. I have read a bunch of posts on the topic, and it will be interesting to hear some answers over guesses. (Technically the SCCA has only issued two or three statements, right?) I already have a bunch of questions ready to go, as we're also interested to hear what happened. I don't want to see rally die in the U.S., as it's not great for us, too. Hopefully there's a solution around the corner.
That really sux. I enjoyed watching the rallies when I could, but like others have said "Thats why the SSCA has insursnce." Anyway nothing we can do about it now.
