Definition of EK, EG, EF??
EF - 1988-1991 years.
EG - 1992-1995 years.
EK - 1996-2000 years.
They are for the model of the vehicle whether it be a Hatchback, Coupe or Sedan. A few of them fall under each year category.
As for my 1995 Sedan, it's an EG8.
I believe there's EJ for the 1992-1995 Coupes. EH for the 1992-1995 Hatchback. EM1 for the 1999-2000 Honda Civic Si. And others can fill in the rest.

So my 99 Civic EX coupe would be considered an EK?
They only look at year and not whether or not its a coupe or sedan, is that right?

No, they look at year AND trim. As you can read above, 92-95 Hatch is EH. 92-95 Sedan is EG. 92-95 Coupe is EJ.

I'll state the obvious since noone else has...
These are the first two letters of your car's VIN - although this sometimes causes confusion. There are some people that call all 92-95 civics EG's, but the tags in the US actually say EH (at least on all my hatchbacks). Some people get all offended by the "incorrectness" of it all...
