Default x-tra air box on OEM intake tube

on my 95 gsr, there is a airbox connecting to the intake tube after the filter. what is that suppose to do other then just sit there. i'll be eliminating that when i install my AEM short ram intake/filter but was just wondering if there is a purpose for that. i would like to know before i take it off.
