1999 just stops running for no reason
My wife had thought her car was dying when coming to a stop sign or when she was stopping. she would have to stop, put it in park, and it would not run for 20 or so seconds, then she would be able to start it up..
i thought it was some type of oxygen sensor problem or fuel injector, so i bought some fuel injector cleaner, and hooked the car up to a scan tool i have going through a laptop.
There were no trouble codes, and the oxygen sensor's were running fine.
When i took the car to the store to get some fuel injector cleaner, i was going about 50-60 mph, and the car just dies-- lights go off, lose power for steering, etc. i throw it in neutral and try to crank it-- nothing. i had to pull over for a 10-30 seconds, then it just worked fine.
I had thought it might have been the car alarm we had installed months ago-- it had remote start, but i unplugged it and the car was still doing the same thing. it just started doing it about a week ago.
I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts, or should i just take it up to honda-- and if i did, what are they going to do as opposed to a normal garage. will the honda computer reader be a lot more helpful, etc..

might be your battery, if it dies and you try to start your car and you hear a ticking noise tic tic tic, then its your battery. its low enough to just die on you. you might want to check your fuses to make sure they are not blown cause if they are then you might be killing your battery that way. happened to me, my ecu fuse was blown (the one located by sterring column) for some reason my car still ran haha, dont know why. but it sucked the life out of my battery. also if your alternator is bad, it will cause your battery to die. hope this helps
peace,
peace,
a friend told me that it was displaying the symptoms of a malfunctioning ignition control module.. so i bought one, hoping that'll alleviate the problem..
will post when i find out if it worked or not.. (if anyone cares)

i seriously doubt it's the battery. if the battery was bad, you would only have problems starting the car. a bad battery could not cause the car to just die while driving. loose connections, yes... bad battery, no.
it acted like i turned the key off (back one knotch from the cranked position.
like i was driving along.. then just turned the key back one notch. i tried turning it back slightly, to see if the key switch might be bad or worn, but it seemed pretty robust.
i did replace the ignition control module, and it ran fine.. until today. i was headed to the mall on a rather busy road, and it died as i was turning. about 15-20 seconds before it died, i caught a glimpse of a warning light that came on, but it disappeared before i figured out what it was or what exactly slot it blinked in...
i turned the key all the way off, then tried to crank it.. it turned over but immediately died again.. then i turned to off, tried one more time.. nothing.. finally, it worked. people were behind me honking, etc.. everything was happening so fast because of the embarassment factor-- being THAT guy holding up traffic..
regardless.. now i'm at a total loss... there's no computer codes stored, O2 sensors are functioning normally, etc..
i haven't the slightest clue..

my car has same problem and here is what i think:
fuel filter need to replace
check distributor, roto, cap and wires
main relay located under the dash on driver side

think the fuel filter would allow me to drive for a few days before the problem resurfaced?
it just seems to weird of when it happens.. no sputtering, etc..
if i were driving 70mph down the highway.. at about 2500rpm.. the car just acts like i turned the ignition key back a knotch-- to keep in mind how/when it happens.
total power loss.. power steering goes out, dash lights go off, etc..
if i throw it in neutral, and try to start it.. it acts like it turns over, but it doens't start back up. i usually have to sit on the road for 30 or so seconds before it starts going as normal.

It actually ended up being the ignition switch behind the key slot (whatever technical term that is called). Some heavy guage wires that go up to where you key is-- are soldered onto the electrical part of the ignition switch-- something had put too much of a load on one of the wires-- because you could see the solder basically coming off. I'll try to get a pic of the part-- they let me keep it. but the car hasnt' died since.
i didn't have the time or patience to track that down, so i brought it to the dealer.. 56 bucks for the part, 200 bucks for labor..
*sigh*
Thanks for all the suggestions- now i know what all i could check if it ever did it again on any car i might have in the future.
