Default VIR Rolex and Grand Am Cup photos

I have probably another 100+ worthy photos to share, but these are the best of the bunch in my opinion. Let me know if you want the full resolution versions, and I can email them to you, or perhaps somebody else can host them for me... Enjoy!

First the Rolex race:

fan-friggin-tastic photos John! What equipment were you using? Were you on the spectator side of the fence for most of the shots?

I was a spectator peon behind the fences using a Canon Digital Rebel with a 300mm lens.

I have to admit that the camera did most of the work, and I need to work on learning all the different lighting settings and such. Since there wasn't as much sun this weekend, Photoshop AutoColor brightened up a few of the images.

Those are some unbelievable photos!

Anyone else see that nasty crash between Oswaldo Negri and Cort Wagner? That is two races in a row they've had an incident like that.

Damn, where did the BMW place in GT? Looked like he had to check up quite a bit in that first picture and is on the pedal in the rest.

Bill Auberlin / Justin Marks in the #21 M3 placed 1st, Boris Said / Joey Hand in the #22 M3 placed 2nd.

Does anybody know what's new on the M3s in GT this year? A few years ago the GT3 Rs were beating up on them in ALMS until BMW was allowed to run the V8. (This all happened before PTG ran in the WC.) Are the BMWs allowed to run the V8s again, or they just slowed down the Porsches a bit? Great pics.

I think they still arent allowed to use the V8's. This season they took their ALMS cars from a few years ago and put M3 engines from their WC cars in there(i think..). This was why they had so much trouble at Daytona this year, looks like they fixed the problems, I dont think theyve lost in GT since then this year.

Awesome pics BTW!

PTG is using 3.4 liter motors now and had some initial teething problems with them. They seem to be going pretty well now.

Racerboy, I believe PTG for their WC cars actually carried over the six that they had been using previously in the ALMS if I'm not mistaken. Brian, I didn't know that. The slight increase in displacement makes sense. Thanks!

My guess is that the competition isn't nearly as deep in the Grand-Am GT class as there was in ALMS.

Just a bit of advice from what I've been learning from shooting HPDE events, since I don't get events like this around here.

When you're shooting a turn use a high shutter speed so everything freezes up. This works better becasue multiple cars in the corner are more in focus.

On the straights I usually use a 1/60 or 1/80 shutter speed and pan with the car to get the sense of speed and blurring behind the car.

Regardless of what I suggest, GREAT PHOTOS!

I would -love- to see the originals pm me on AIM or something (CptCorN)

You don't have to go as low as 1/60-1/80 to show good motion. I shot this at 1/320:

When panning with a slow shutter speed, the subject has a chance to get slightly out of focus since the AF freezes once you open the shutter. Using a slightly higher speed also reduces the chances of camera shake messing up the shot. However, 1/60th will create quite a dramatic feeling of speed.

Nice! ... how close to the track were you? Oh how I wish I had an IS lens.

Thats the only reason I don't like to shoot 1/60 or 1/80 since even if the car bounces part of the car will be out of focus.

**EDIT
I notice firefox was resizing the images... dammit... they look even better... nice shots! Also... what i suggested was by no means the guidlines to take photos... just a meathod i work with.
