Default Need help picking out speakers! Dont really know what im looking for.

I am looking for some quality speakers. I have done a little research on some types of speakers but i really dont know much about what i need to make them work. I dont want to feel stupid but i just dont know that much. I want to know that if i buy a set of 6x9 speakers would i have to power them by an amp. The speakers that i am looking at are made by sony. THey are the xplods and it says that it puts out about 260 watts. People on the site recommended jl audio and i am not counting that out but i want to get the low down on others. If you wouldnt mind just letting me know what you think of these speakers. Like i said earlier i dont know that much about this kind of stuff and i have tried looking up on my own. Its not that i am stupid i just dont know.
Thank You

Just so you know, speakers don't "put out" any watts. The 260 watt rating you mentioned is how much peak power they can handle, should you decide to amp them.

The best suggestion I can make is don't ask people what you should get. Go to a shop and listen to speakers. Then, buy the ones that sound the best to YOU.

Also, spend the extra 6 bucks and buy the speaker plugs so you don't have to cut any wires.

Don't get sonys...they make terrible products (the xplod crap)

for nice speakers, depending on your budget here are some good brands:
High end - Infinity (kappa and pefect series) Focal, MB Quart, CDT Audio
image dynamics, digital designs,
Good - Infinity (reference), alpine (type r), polk audio
Decent - phoenix gold, rockford fosgate, pioneer
Bad - sony, kenwood, jensen

You'll notice you can't find a lot of those high end brands at your local circuit city....go figure . By the way im not sure how much you know so let me explain a few things.

Peak Power: Do not pay attention to this when buying subs or speakers. It only comes into play when buying a capacitor.
RMS: This is what you pay attention too, although it's also misleading. When a speaker is fed power, heat is going through it's coils. That's what RMS means. The amount of heat that speaker can take continously (whereas peak is at any one point in a song) Let's say those infinitys are 110watt rms...they don't need 110watts exactly to perform to their max. They could be fed 90watts and sound as good as if they were given 110.

If I was you and you are looking for 6x9's...correct? Are you sure they fit your vehicle? If I was getting 6x9's I would get the infinity Kappa 6x9s. I believe they will run you around 100-125$ if you buy them online. Probably more like 150$ if you get them at circuit city or something. Infinity makes great speakers, they aren't the absolute best, but they are up there in quality.

you dont HAVE to get an amp, although if you're going to buy nice speakers, it's almost pointless to not get an amp. ill try to put it in perspective. It's like buying an IPOD and not having a battery in it. (good analogy huh ) Literally it is. Your HU (head unit, cd player) is most likely 50x4 but thats max rating. It is realyl only given each of your speakers 18watts or so RMS. So when you buy speakers that want around 100watts RMS or so, and you are giving them 18, well...i think it's self explanatory.

my aim screen name is funnycookie87 and my email is weezer_ocks@hotmail.com

please contact me with as many questions as you can think of. Im giving you those because I dont check this board very often.

</TD></TR></TABLE> Take your fave. CD to some car audio shops and listen to speakers ,[with and without amps] and get the ones you like the sound of, don't forget, unless the "soundroom" is the size of a car, the speakers will sound even better in your car. 94

When you demo speakers on a soundboard, they will sound completely different in-car. Most commercial shops (Best buy, circuit city, tweeter, al & eds) have a terrible setup.

The best advice I can give you here is to actuall listen to several different installs (Car Audio installs). Problem: The install is actually a huge part of the sound, and people will have varying levels of install quality... As you can see, choosing speakers is a rather difficult process.

How do I do it? --- I audition with trusted sources...I note the install procedures, I note technical reports on speakers (objective) such as DUMAX and Distortion tests... I model the speakers' response in my specific environment using simulation software.

Give us a budget and the type of sound you're looking for, about how much work you're willing to put into your car... maybe I can help
