help, track on cluster melted.
k my indiglo gauges burnt out, and i tried wiring up the old cluster lights but they dont turn on at all now, reason i think is cuz one of the tracks melted apart on the back of the cluster,(the track where 2 wires are leadin out of a bulb on the back right side). Anyways how can i get this working again so i can drive at night
you tapped wires for the aftermarket guages off the back of the cluster itself? like where that circuit board is? really bad idea.
ANY red/black wire under the dash is powered when you turn your lights on, for future reference. although the one to the cluster may be shorted now... in which case when you get a new cluster, you might want to check with a multimeter if you have 12 volts when the lights come on from the wire that sends it. you can check one of the pdf helms around to get the color if its not red black, its been a while since i did my sir cluster so i forget.
acording to MECP which is the national standard for car audio/security techs says you should always be at least 5 inches from any device when making a tap, and if the wire is going to carry voltage it must be fused, with 5 inches on either side of it the fuse itself. its rare, but the results of ignoring these rules are what happened to you.
sorry man, good luck maybe you can seperate the contacts by scraping them away, or if you really want the milage to match you could get another cluster, and try to swap the odometers, i did that once it was a little tricky but very doable.
