How do I set my engine to TDC while its out of the car?
How do I set my engine to TDC while its out of the car? Im in the middle of a major overhaul on my hybrid civic, and Im at the final stage of swapping out the timing belt and stock pulleys on my b18c1. So how do I set the motor to TDC while its sitting on the ground in front of my car?
Match the white mark on the crank pulley with the arrow on the lower timing belt cover.
or...if you have the timing belt covers off
Match the line on the timing belt drive sprocket with the arrow on the oil pump housing.

now, once I get it there, after I remove the timing belt and replace it. Does the car have to be at TDC for me to replace the alternator pulley with an N1 style pulley(alternator only)?
No. The keyway takes care of the orientation of the crank pulley. Just install the key, slip the new crank pulley onto the crank snout, and torque the bolt to spec. Orientation is not an issue after the timing belt is on and timed correctly.
dont forget that camgears have the arrow that point up
then match the two dots on camgears on the inside

yep, and I just found out yesterday that B-series cams and cam rails have holes in them, which line up when #1 is at TDC, so you can stick a punch or screwdriver in each cam to keep it lined up (great for loosening or torquing the cam gear bolts).

awesome. I had a fiasco with my camgear bolts. This will help from future headaches.

Do you guys have a pic of these dots on the cam gears so that when I get into the shop tomorrow Im not going in blind. Also what do you mean by sticking in screw drivers into the cams to keep them at tdc?
Mine don't ever perfectly line up for some odd reason. The holes for the pins/chop sticks are in the cam rail and the pin will fall into an shallow hole machined into the camshaft when the cam is where it's supposed to be.

This is what I use to remove the crank pulley bolt. It's worked for me with the block in or out of the car.
