Default Are std's really this slow ?

I recently picked up a civic hatchback, its a 1990 4 speed 1.5 dpfi and was wondering if there really this slow ? Let me explain a little more, in first gear pick up is pretty good but when its in 2nd or 3rd or even 4th, I stomp on the gas pedal and it seems like nothing happens, no jerk at all or anything like that. The car drives fine, it does not bog down or anything, it picks up speed slowly, just wondering if this sounds normal to people ? I'm gonna post some pics tomorrow, got a great deal on it from a friend, only $400 and it runs great and the interior is flawless.

I have that exact same car model. I shift into second at around 13 mph, third at 26 mph and fourth at 41 mph. I have really good pick up. Remember this particular model was built for gas milage, not performance.

Oh yeah I understand, I was just wondering though. Car runs great, idles a little rough but I think the idle is set to low, it just seemed odd that I was in second gear and I stomped on the gas and the car did not even jerk. Whats this model redline at and also whats the rev limiter, it sucks not having an rpm gauge.

Yeah I understand there general slow, I'm not looking for speed, its actually gonna be my Dad's work car. The main thing was, when in any other gear besides first, I can stomp on the gas pedal and the car does not even jerk, speed just increases slowly.

well if its anything like my crx, then yes its very very slow. I have an 89 hf and its the slowest car I've ever driven. I was in second going about 45 when I shift it to third and it just bogged down. I thought it was gonna die on me

So if you smash the gas in second or third, the car does not even jump at all ?

Welcome to world of tall gears. I can relate, as I drove for one year with an HF tranny bolted to my d16a6. The difference is like night and day, I pray that I never have to go back.

I was reading this post, and I was wondering. Does it start to accerate when the RPMs get higher? I did a timmingbelt chand on my friends 89 Automatic DX Hatch, and it was off a tooth for me, never timmed a SOHC before. Well anyway it was slow as **** had no pull at all and then seemed to pick up at about 3k. Fixxed the timming, and it's still slow, just not falling on it's face leaving the line. I'm wondering if this might be the situation? If not I'm sure you are just expecting more outa the car than what it is. Those cars are awful slow, you try an HF out. Those are really fast.J/K

lol............I have a d15b6 with the hf tranny in my STD, talk about slow but I still pulled a 44.5 at this weekend's auto-x! fastest of the day was a 40.7!

the tall gears do suck, but alas I just downshift and give her hell.
