Well I got a 12 ton press so it was pretty easy.
If you plan on doing much car work in your life buy a press it will pay for itself a million times over.

Press definately. That is one of the best suspension upgrades you can do on the older chassis.

I'm thinkin' it's about time to change mine out, they are a little tired after 232K+...

My question is how bad are poly bushings in a daily driver? I'd prefer not to be beat stupid, and my poly engine mounts already rattle the thing ridiculously (at certain RPMs) so if every shithole in the road will be directly transmitted to my shithole, i may have to rethink the poly susp. bushings...

Anybody with the polys driving it everyday? Lemme kno what's up...TIA

Fresh OEM bushings vs. 232K mile OEM bushings aren't exactly the same thing. You're going to notice more stiffness just with OEM bushings alone. You've got to have a reason to go with the poly in certain areas, and I'm still convinced that it's a bad idea in certain applications.

As for the original question...20 ton press from harbor freight

Speaking from experience because I actually did my front lower CA bushings this afternoon, there's no way in hell I would ever go to all the trouble in the link above. I pressed my bushings (all four) out in about 10 minutes, and pressed in the new ones in about 5 minutes. I would seriously go out of my mind following the directions in that link above.

I didn't and still don't have a press.
Many people without presses do it that way.
It's not that hard.... really.

Your going to need a press my friend. I have the full poly bushing kit on my daily driver and its not that bad. I also have 400/450 spring rates also so its not that bad until you hit a pot hole . Its very time consuming even if you have a press, torch, and hammer. Mind as well check all your upper and lower ball joints, and wheel bearings to see if they need to be replaced.

No press needed to remove bushings. No press needed to install bushings. This way is harder but it can be done. You'll notice the imperfections in the road a little more. It's worth it in the long run especially when driving hard. Have you considered grease fittings in the control arms?

I got my rears pressed out for 20 bux, and could have done all 4 for 30. After I did the fronts by hand, it was worth it to have the rears done for me.

I have this one: http://www.harborfreight.com/c...32879

It has removed/installed every bushing, bearing, hub, and stud I have thrown at it without any fuss.

The press mechanism is based on a 20 ton bottle jack. I paid no shipping as I picked it up locally. Either way, shipping is free on this item ($50 and over is free shipping). You'll have to pay tax if there is an HF in your state, I believe.

Do you think the 12 ton model would do the same work? Saving $80 is alot

stick the bushings in the freezer before you try to install them, they will shrink a little

I burned out the center rubber on the stock bushings then i used my air hammer to get the metal sleeve out. Wasn't fun but probly only took me a couple hours to pull the rear arms and have em back in with new bushings.

use a press........and to make it even easier.....I soaked my control arms and such in a hot tank overnight. Might want to get Prothane rear lower trailing arm bushings....they have very little deflection.

I'm guessing it would work. I know that saving $80 is a lot, but I was afraid to spend $120 for the smaller press only to discover that it wasn't enough. Better safe than sorry, but I suspect the 12 ton would be enough.

get a press and when you get done with the bushing kit go out and buy some 500 lb springs for front and 1000 lbs sprigns in rear. I rock that everyday.

with basic tools and a $5 walmart propane torch i was fine with no press. Of course it took me many hours and wasn't the easiest route but it was the cheapest! Just use tons of grease and use a hacksaw on front conrol arm bushing casings. A big C-clamp or table vise helps too.

People will argue whatever with the poly bushings but i replaced every bushing in my car...i mean every, from all mounts, all suspension to shifter etc. and i think they made an impressive difference for the money.

No problem with my rear TA bushing so far either...

Good luck steve!
