Default Accord Automatic Transmission---Junkyard Help

Hey guys, whats up...

I have a 1992 Honda Accord Automatic Sedan. My transmission decided to go on me, its an automatic, so i am gonna replace the whole thing with a new one from a junkyard. The junkyard I go to either allows you to pull parts yourself, or you can have them pull it for you for a $200 fee. The transmission itself is $125 if you pull it yourself.

I would like to know if anybody knows what in particular I should look for when deciding which car to take it out of. I figured I would check the tranny fluid to be sure that it is red, but can i do anything else?

Also, the most important one. How heavy are these transmissions? Will I be able to carry it around?

I just did an engine/transmission swap on a Camry, so I know what im doing, i just havent ever done a straight transmission to know how heavy it is. Thanks!

Your best bet is to have them pull it. That auto goes close to 200lb's. Unless your a really big guy,lol you probably don't want to carry it. That and its hard to take all the tools with you to a junk yard. Let them pull it for you, its money well spent.

That trans cost seems a little low. Be sure you understand the mileage on the trans. Pull the drain plug and inspect. A 1/2 teaspoon of iron powder is about typical for wear after 30K miles w/o fluid change. See following link for comparison to your prices.

good luck

Thanks for your advice guys...I actually went against your guys' advice tho, a buddy of mine has an engine hoist, so we brought it to the junkyard along with a couple jacks and a set of hand tools and went to work. It took us just over 2 hours to remove the auto tranny, and one of the guys at the junkyard came over with their forklift and loaded it into our car. Put it on my car just last night and it works perfectly. The car had 85,000 miles on it that we took it off of, and there was a bottle of denture cleaner in the wrecked car! This made me think that it was driven by some old fart, so it must have been babied. I must say that $125 for an auto transmission replacement is far better than the quoted $2,000+ by aamco transmissions to rebuild it. I do love knowing about how cars work! Also picked an alternator off the same car for $12. works great....no squealing.
