Newb wants to do work on car/s, wants info/guide
Intro: Just got a 91 Civic DX Hatch, and am learning stick. I'm a complete newb to working on cars (maintainance, repair, swaps, etc).
Basically, every repair, part swap, build, installation, etc. that I ever will do on my car, I want to be able to do myself. Thing is, I don't know how to do an oil change let alone build and tune an engine. Since I have no idea where to begin, maybe somebody here could point me in the right direction.
What do you suggest? Books, classes, people in the chicago area willing to help me out?
Are the materials at helminc.com any good?

Helm's manuals are awesome. Mine's in the mail.
My advice would be to start with the simple things like oil changes and minor tune-ups - changing sparkplugs and wires, air filters, cap and rotor. That way you'll get familiar with tools and your car.

The best advice I can give you is that you cant be afraid to take stuff apart. Just make sure that you label things as you take them apart. Take pictures if you have a digital camera. That way you know what things looked like before hand. Ive learned alot by just grabbing my tools and jumping in.

It's pretty simple if you divide the car into different sections. Most things are self explanitory.
I practice on the cars at the junkyard. Picking up the wrench is the first step. Get a torque wrench for the more in depth stuff.
