Default Need new engine. Recommendations?

Friend of mine had his 91 Integra die last week.
199,300 miles on the original block.

Rather than a new car, thinking he might want to stay with this one, since he hates having a car payment.

Can anyone reccomend some resources or sites on what engine can fit in here and what available options there are?

Keep in mind this is a daily driver, not something that will be tracked, tuned, boosted etc. Low price, compatiablity and reliability are the priority here, not horsepower.

Thanks.

if he just wants the car to be the same as before, you could find a B18A longblock for around $300 in the H-T classifieds.

Also, here is the engine swap guide from g2ic.com, lots of good info on what fits and how to do swaps into 90-93 Integras.

If he decides to swap to a different engine (b16, b18b, etc) you might want to look at http://www.hmotorsonline.com. They are a good source for USDM and JDM Honda motors.

but for that b16 he'd need a better tranny. I think the LS tranny is too slow for a b16 but whatever, you can save up for a b16 tranny later on i guess. but with b16 you have to worry about emissions, im thinkin of just buyin a new b18a/b or somethin

if he wants a direct replacement the b18b is a drop in motor. using his distributor, injectors, and some sensors it will work 100%.

No, it wouldn't pass the visual test if the person knew what to look for. But I bet most places wouldn't care, since it still has b18 stamped on it. However, the b18b would definitely pass the BAR certification, as would a B18C.

Any motor that came out of a newer car, and was offered in a US model would be able to be certified by BAR. It just needs to have the same emissions equipment hooked up as the car it came out of - look up a thread by 'Luserkid' on BAR certification on engine swaps. He put a B18C1 in a Civic and never has to worry about failing smog due to a swap.

If swapping to a JDM B18B you could use old parts from your B18A. You would probably have to, as you would need to maintain all of the emissions devices that would have been on 94-01 LS Integras. The idea is that you can pass a JDM motor through the BAR as long as you have all of the smog control components required for the car it would come from in the US.

hmotorsonline sells entire B18B (JDM or USDM) changeovers (incl hydro tranny) for $2200. So you could get a USDM one and have to worry less about the ecu and emissions stuff. If you got the JDM one, it would require more work to pass it.

Check out http://www.g2ic.com for the engine swap guide, and look at these links:

Beeker16 - you don't have to worry about any of this crap, cuz you live in Texas. Consider yourself lucky!

jdm and usdm b18b1 are identical outside. they just use different cams and slightly different intake manifolds.

you would want to use your dizzy, injectors, ecu and sensors. everything else you can use. as long as the engine is newer then your car its ok. the emmisions systems on the newer engines work better then the old b18a1's. my swap passed emmisions here in ct just fine. i used the newer intake manifold and throttle body too. i just extended the wire for the map because its now located on the t.b. instead of the firewall. and my engine is worked over, so a stock engine would pass emmisions real easy.
