Need Help with 98 Accord Transmission
I own a 1998 Honda Accord, 4cyl, LX with 98K miles on it. For some time, I was having trouble with auto transmission. It would lock up or would not change gears. Todayi found out that the transmission is shot or burned. The car still runs and the transmission is still working and changing gears. Do not know what it means but would like to get it fixed. If I have to replace, please provide information on how to go about doing it. I do not wqant to go to the dealer, as they would be the most expensive.
Thanks in advance.

Update 1.
Is there anyway I can fix or do anything with tranny, until I find something permanent...The car is still running and not dead yet....
Update 2.
1. The car is not under warranty. The mileage on the car is 98K and is 6 years old.
2. The last time I cahnged transmission oil was at 45k
3. Can someone knowledgeble, explaing if there is a procedure where the remaining oil can be drained out, clean the inside of the transmission and re-fill it again....

Tranny going out on that car is farly comon. If I were you and looking to get it replaced I would go to the dealer to have it done. There not always the most expensive and you know its going to be done right. If they screw it up there more likely to stand behind it and fix there mistake. Plus if the shop your having does the repair and uses anything but Honda ATF you'll be in the same boat in a short amount of time.
i had the same problem, my gears would always slip until it got really bad, i took it in and they took care of it, it still does it a little here and there, so your best bet is taking it to the dealer.
if you are still under warranty like stated bring it to the dealer a.s.a.p
whens the last time you changed/checked your fluid??
but for a tranny rebuild/replaced youre looking at close to 1000-1700 if you know a mechanic... regular mechanics will probably try to get over 2 grand out of you...

The tranny is not under warranty, right?
A couple of suggestions:
Don't even think about fixing the tranny yourself unless you have excellent auto mechanical skills. Just look at an exploded diagram of a transmission and ask yourself if you can keep all of those part sorted out with the correct clearances!
If your tranny is going out, changing the fluid will probably not help. The dark fluid is just the symptom of more serious failures going on in your tranny with the hard parts.
Take your car to the dealer or to a reputable transmission mechanic. Ask lots of questions--look around in the shop. If it's not clean, run. Don't go for the cheapest deal. I did and the tranny lasted less than six months. When I took it back to the guy, he tried to claim that someone who didn't like me had obviously tampered with the transmission and made it explode internally. Right! But that's what you get on the cheap.
Good luck!
