Just Finished A/C Removal on D15B1 (What a Difference)
Well at 1:30PM I finished the removal of the air conditioning in my 88 STD D15B1. WHAT DIFFERENCE IT MAKES. My God, it's unbelievable... it's like a new car... well not really.
The throttle response is amazing now and 2nd gear no longer lags like crazy at 2500-3200. I highly recommend to anyone that doesn't really care about their A/C. It demolishes the car's performance.
Peices removed were:
01. The AC Compressor (14lbs)
02. AC Compressor Mount w/wheel (5lbs)
03. AC Fan (5lb)
04 The "Dryer" (-1lb)
05 The Condenser (7lbs)
06 All the tubing and bolts. (1b)
Grand total of 32+lbs!
This took me about 3 hours by myself. I broke a wrench and cut my hand, but that was about all the casualties. You have to take your car to a shop and have the freon drained. You can let it blast out into the atmosphere but it's definetly not good for the environment and I think it's pretty much illegal in every state to do so.
The piping was a bitch to take out so I ended up hacksawing most of it apart. Made things a heck of a lot eisier and if you plan on throwing most of the AC system out do it, it saves a lot of time and headache.
Don't toss the compressor or anything like that, you can sell those on EBAY. They go for a decent amount.
I still have to go to a junkyard and find a Non-AC hatch to get rid of the interior evaporator. But other than that... I'm done.

All Gone!

It's not too hard to unbolt the lines, just grab the evap. canister and pull up. It will slide up and give you enough space to get wrenches on the bolts. And with the Evap. inside the car, you can take out the evap. itself and put the plastic housing back together for a temp. fix.
They all came with the option for it. But usually the 88-91 STDs didn't have AC. The person that originally bought my car got AC and no power steering on a 4spd manual. Go figure.

Dude, I snapped a craftsman wrench trying to unbolt the lines. I didn't have a torch handy, but I sure had a hacksaw. Problem solved.

Yo man those are aluminum lines, I really don't see how anyone can break any kind of wrench on those tow lines.
Just for the weight reduction you took your A/C out. I would kill for A/C in my CRX man.

Yea, that's why I took it to a friend's shop to get it drained. I wouldn't recommend that to anyone.
And as for weight, 30lbs or more when you have less than 100HP makes a big difference.

why did u cut the lines? i didn't read your post... i just unbolted my **** and then taped up the hole in the firewall....

kinda off topic but i heard you could switch from r12 refridgerent to r134. r134 is cheaper by the pound, so do they just flush your old out and put in the new or do you have to get other components replaced?
mah spoon's too big!

I knew about cutting it I just wasn't sure if I wanted to. I cut the lines cause it was eisier. I'm also going to unbolt the peices and fill the grommet. Those aren't going to stay there like that.

Oh man, If I could hit 17.5 in the 1/4 I would **** myself hahaha. The D15B1's cams are pinnicle of economic design. Power above 4000RPMs? What's that? The engine's coming out soon so I'm just doing the best I can with what I got for the time being.

yea, if anyone wants any of the parts make an offer PM ME do not offer here this isn't a FS post!
AC Compressor is new, less than 4 years. Everything else is 88 stock in working condition. I don't have the lines (obviously) but everything else is there.

Theres a way you just take it out and duct tape it back up I believe.
http://www.fourthgenhatch.com might have the info on there. I know he did a write up awhile back.

Yea, I know about that method, but there's a great junkyard on Long Island that does specifically Hondas and Acuras. I can pick up the non-evap peice for a couple bucks. So I figured why hack?

i blew a compressor (should have seen it BIG BOOM then i see bits of metal fly out in my rear view mior
sparking all over the place. ) so i pull over and half the out side of the cpmprssor is gone shaft and belt are in tact thought dont askme how
any way i wipp out my pocket nife and cut the belt there on the freeway. damn i said and took it in to my local shop.
there he said that it would be cheaper to convert to R134A so long story short i did all i needed was a new compressor DUH!!! and a dryer + freon. the compressor was $600
and labor + freon + drier was another 300 + tax
so i spent about $980 but it blows motherfuc*in cold ~18 degries
that said, screw the weight of it and has about 60 HP when A/C's on. AC's DAMN WORTH IT. I WILL NEVER PART WITH MINE

You also live in California. When was the last time you drove in some snow. 70%+ of the year here it's not hot enough to need AC. And even when it does get "hot" there's only a couple days over 90 or so. Hence why I don't care.
On the other side most of my EF friends that have rims also have spare steelies to drive in the snow. You got them, Mr. Sunshine?
