air intakes
I want to put something in my car (2001 LS) to add a little horsepower but wasnt sure on intakes.
Do they really make a difference?
do they make your car sound different?
Are the cold air intakes more subseptable to getting water in them than short ram? if so would a short ram be a better choice?
thanks i am extremely new to cars and im just trying to learn.

Alot of people like hte sound of short ram intakes and cold air intakes. But thats just for sound, alone, it probably won't make any real difference for performance. 1-2 horsepower isn't measurable, and you get that kind of variation between tanks of gas.
i think cold air is the wasy to go. i have cold air and a water bypass valve so water doesnt go into my engine. i was told its better ro have a cold air to keep the motor cool and the fluid hot for better lubriction.

I just installed an AEM cold air yesterday on my 00 LS. I noticed a pretty impressive power gain but nothing extrodenary. It's a lot louder than the stock system to answer your question. The CAI hangs inches from the ground so you can't play "boat" with your car in the winter and plunge through puddles or your car will hydro-lock. In normal rainy weather it will be fine AS LONG as you keep your splash gaurd on. A CAI is a greta first MOD

from what i've seen, the comptech icebox gives you the best gains. if you want just the basics, just get intake, headers, cat, and cat-back. but if you're planing on going fi or na in the future then i would get something that would go along with what you want.

i just got a $15 dollar ebay intake...and a $15 dollar ebay filter...one I had was busted so I got this silver one with a heatshield...matches the car
prices include shipping
mileage is a lil bit better +1 mpg highway
sound is growly so its pretty nice
performance....at low rpms its same...at higher rpms there is a lil bit of more pull

ignore the wires and tape I cleaned that **** up ...and simplegreened the engine bay

if u get intake, your next mods should be header and exhaust.

That's garbage... Your butt dyno doesn't mean there's a power gain.
You won't notice anything except for the sound. The only way to make decent power is to do the basic things. High flow intake, exh manifold, catalytic, pipe and muffler. From there, go on towards your TB, p&p ... etc, etc. There's tons of info on here.

first got the GSR one for 25 shipped, then got the mugen knock off
didn't feel like selliong the GSR one cuz a) shipping is like 10 bucks by itself, and like 15 after I get all the boxes whatever and selling it for 10 bucks into my pocket was pretty pointless and b) its on different bolts than the mugen one so its not like its interfering
so who knows maybe the fact taht there is 2 bars means the car is more stable...who knows...but after adding the mugen one handling def improved over just the gsr one...but I think its cuz the mugen style bar is much better design and metal

Hey man, a cold air intake is one of the and probably the cheapest way to gain extra hp for your car. I would definitely recommend AEM. I say this because when the RSX Type S came out, Honda Tuner Magazine did dyno tests with each different intake and the AEM Long Ram came out on top by a large margin, around 15 extra hp. And im not bs'ing you, I have the magazine to prove it. If you do decide to get an intake, make sure it comes equipped with a good air filter because a lot of the cheaper intakes usually come with lower quality air filters, and no car can afford a bad air filter.
first thing to do is to let the car breathe better...basic bolt ons (intake, header, exhaust)..but the it gets crazy if u want to go farther. it's a nice little gain
and remember hp is different from whp....

A cold air intake won't keep the motor cool. That is the job of the cooling system As far as lubrication, thats down to the oil, and if your worried about that try an oil cooler.
A cold air intake however will bring in cooler air for a better combustion hence more power.

most companies CAIs are more or less modular. i dont know for the G3 teggies but most have a two piece design that allows you to have a shortram and CAI depending on whether or not you have the bottom section on
lol my CAI was one of the last additions i made to my car

What?! Where'd you get that info from? As far as most short ram intakes go, yes there will be barely any increase in Hp if any at all because you are just taking in hot air from the engine bay. But as far as cold air intakes go, there are thousands of dyno charts that say otherwise. You could see a decent increase in HP with a Cold air intake

it depends on the setup. there was a thread going around the itr forum a while ago (somewhere buried in the archives) that made a big buzz because the addition of an aem CAI actually lost power over the stock intake, and had dynos to prove it. i've seen a couple more dyno's that showed a definite increase in power, so it goes to show that a cai will not necessarily work the same for every set up.
