Default ------- What turbo is on the Mitsu Evo8 ?

I keep seeing that it's a twin scroll turbo setup. I'm not sure if i know what it is. One of my buddies kinda explained it to me by I wanted to see what others thought.

questions:
-what is the stock turbo?
-how many psi can that internal WG hold?
-what turbo flange is it?
-is it water cooled?
-what is the max whp range?

Might as well get an EVO at this rate Charlie! j/k!

1) TD05HR-16G6-9.8T
2) Stock rating is @ 19psi.
3) Mitsubishi.
4) Yes.
5) A little less than 400whp.

What he says .

My buddy has a EVO with some mods (exhaust, dp, cams, fuel pump, tuning) and he just dynoed last week 330 WHP/315 FT/LB Torque on the stock turbo. He's running at about 25 psi now. The turbo has some more in it though; some guys have been getting around 400 HP out of them, but I'm sure it is starting to get out of their efficiently range by then.

Probably the best "bang for your buck" new car out there today.

Those EVOs are damn hot cars. I still haven't even had a chance to see one in RL yet.

haha LOL. I'm just curiouse cause i might be going with this turbo down the road if I upgrade from my tiny apexi turbo.
damn stock rate at 19psi... Gotta love that stiff internal wg spring!

is that 16G6-9.8T larger or smaller than the ones that Garrett made for the Greddy kits 18G?

My bro acquired one off of eBay, but discovered the flange wouldn't bolt right up without a custom mani for his Talon. I think he's selling it, if anyone's interested...he explained some techno-babble to me about the twin-scroll setup, but I'll I got out of it was that it spools quicker and more effieciently. When you look into the exhaust housing it's divided, thus the twin-scroll design.

Hmmm, not sure? If Mitsubishi turbos are label accordingly, then I would assume it's smaller than the 18G from Greddy kits? But you don't know until you crack both of them open and measure the wheels. The exhaust housings seem to be similar designations though.

the evo8 does use a divided scroll turbine housing. however, the turbo is configured in a reverse rotation, spinning counterclockwise.

a little OT, but here are some pics of the PeakBoost EVO8 manifold that we installed with a GT3037R and a 44mm TiAL gate:

we have found that over 20-22psi of boost the turbo starts heating the air too much, and with carefully chosen mods they can do about 425hp

one of my customers has the basic boltons, hks 264 cams and aem ems.... laid down 350hp/350tq on a 100 deg day

Improved efficiency @ higher boost levels and one helluva spoolup sound!

The EVO 16g is different than all the others, just because of the twin scroll setup, lets the turbo spool faster, and get bigger HP numbers without running out of steam.

Sick car, I fucken love Evo 8's. They peak at 19 and drop to 16 by redline, so basically your holding 16lbs of boost

i'm in the process of putting the evo 8 turbo on my b18b. i will be making a manifold for it to retain full use of the twin scroll turbo. i have all the parts now just need to start fabing everything. i plan to run 10-12psi. when i get it all going i'll make a post in FI form about it.

See the shroud around the compressor wheel? This additional pocket can help contribute to additional flow at the exducer portion of the compressor wheel at higher boost levels. Basically, it doesn't have to "fight" to suck in more air at high boost pressures like a typical inlet.

Ok i do see that!
now for more questions that some turbo gurus may be able to help me out with.

1) This antisurge cover can it be created to applied to any turbo out there?

2) How is the air flow controlled as in if it'll go to the DIRECT port inlet out around it?
or does it not matter?

3) is that picture of the actual Evo8 turbo?
Does anyone have any pictures?

Twin scroll = 1910's era technology. Glad to see OEM technology advancing a whole decade past the norm.

please explaine. That statment told us nothing of how it works.
If it is out dated tecnology how come they have brought it back and using it in a bad *** car & awesome motor?
