Default Differences between cold air intake brands?

Hey, just lookin' at cold air intakes on ebay and there are too many to choose from. Probably more confusing is the fact that they range in price from abot 16.00 to 100.00 and up. So.. if they are all just pieces of aluminum with filters at the end, then why are they priced so far apart? It seems like the lower priced brands would work equally as well, unless there is something these companies aren't telling us in their ads. If someone can justify the high price with can't lose performance, then please feel free to enlighten me.. Thanks.

Smog=aem
No smog=cheapest tube with k&n.

Search for your answers.

So it doesn't matter what it costs, just as long as the filter is K&N brand? Why do the others create smog? Does the smog come from the exhaust? Can it harm the engine? I am kinda new to this so sorry if I am asking too much, thanks again.

These intake threads get really annoying, at least one new topic about intakes every week. If only you learned how to search you could get find the answers you need faster.

Hey smart_ss, why do you think I posted it on a message board.. so I can get results faster from people who have tried things before!! It is a NEW way to help people get information, it's called developing technology! So if you don't like my question then don't read or reply to it and move on to what you really came to this site for, OKAY? Instead of concerning yourself with how other people choose to do research, why not spend you're time trying to help them.. Now if anyone (else) out there has any honest information please help, I'm trying to be cautious 'cause I don't want to screw my car up, thanks again.

You can easily see 100 threads on your exact topic by searching, or you can wait hours/days for people to respond one-by-one to your thread...your choice

Alright, sorry for being so insensitive. I just want whats best and I figured this would be a good way to get help. I just bought my car a week ago and I am cautious, it's serious for me and I don't want costly repairs further down the road.. That's all. I apreciate your time responding and will research all advice offered to me. Again, thanks alot.

All filters suck up water if exposed to water.

They are sponge-type filters rather than cotton wire-mesh... so their absorbant quality will make hydro-lock more probable, but it is a risk you run with any CAI setup.

The HKS Filter has been shown to be the least effective at actually filtering the air.

wouldnt the AEM air bypass valve prevent hydrolocking? the peice is like $50 for a rubber thing that loops around the cai but i think its more practical than taking out your cai setup every time it rains. im not so sure about deep puddles and how effective it is during that situation. but correct if im wrong about the bypass valve preventing hydrolock.
