Head Gasket Replacement Question
My roomate's car(1988 Accord LX, 4 cyclinder) died on the highway a couple of weeks ago and I am helping him fix it. I know the head gasket is shot and I think the head will need to be resurfaced because the engine did overheat. I've worked on engines before and actually helped my buddy replace the head gasket on his 89 Toyota Pickup but I've never worked on a Honda. (We actually ended up finding out the water pump was to blame.) Are there any other typical issues that I should look for specific to Hondas? I'm not a beginner but deffinately not an expert (yet) mechanic so any help is appreciated. Lastly this is the stupid question....if we fill the engine with oil and coolent.... could it survive a trip for about 20 mins off highway? I'm worried I could crack(from steam pressure) but I figured I would ask. (The car isn't noticably burning oil yet, no white smoke) Thanks for all your help.
