difference between the 94-01 gsr engines
whats the difference between a 94-98 and then 99-01 gsr engine if they have the same power i see stuff all the time about **** like headers and exhuast im just curious
difference i know is OBD1 and and OBD2 older engines and new ones. i read somewhere that OBD1 is easier to mod (theres no real proof behind this i just read it) i didnt even know that 94-95 had oil coolers.. in australia the 2 different ages gave a different seat trim actually i got no proff on that either thats just an observation sigh i didnt help much did it sorry thats about all i know but im slowly getting there =P

They used a longer A-pipe & a shorter cat in '99+. So people making headers & exaust systems usually maintain the interface points. That's because not everybody buys the whole system together, including the cat.
The differences in the engine were OBD-1 ('94-'95) vs. OBD-2 ('96+). More sensors, different ECU, not much REALLY different in the engine.

Most of the changes were b/c of the changes in the emissions systems.
EVAP purge system changed and the purge solenoid got moved to the middle of the manifold.
Lower timing belt cover changed from a P30 to P72 part number to make room for the CKF sensor.
The coolant air bleeder nipple formerly found on the upper radiator hose housing on OBD-1 engines was removed on OBD-2 engines.
Power steering pump and high-pressure hose line changed in '98. I'm not sure if this qualifies as part of the engine.
Fuel injector, distributor, and alternator wiring sockets changed in the switch to OBD-2.
FITV eliminated in OBD-2 engines.
Coolant routing changed to facilitate the lack of oil cooler, and the elimination of a nipple on the thermostat housing formerly used for the PCV purge hose. The plumbing is a bit simpler. See coolant hose routing diagrams in '94/'95 and '98 service manual for details.
