Where is the VSS on a D16A8?
hi
my mechanic put in a tthermostat and now the ecu blinks 17 times
my speedo was working now it stopped working
i think something is loose
but i dont know where to look
i can look behind the dash
but i rather think its something loose in the engine bay
anyone know where it is?
thanks

It should be on top of the tranny , close to the firewall and towards the engine ! hope it helps . If i had a pic i'd show you but I dont , sorry.
also it should only have on bolt holding it down and a wire goes to it from the top.

The VSS is on the back of the speedometer.
There is a cable drive that goes from the back of the speedo to the transmission.
The cable plugs into a mechanical gear drive that is mounted in the transmission.
If the cable becomes disconnected or broken then your speedometer stops working and your VSS doesn't send pulses to the ECU and you get a fault code.
The thermostat is just above the speedometer cable so the mechanic could have disconnected the cable for some reason. There is a small wire clip that holds the cable to the gear drive. If the clip was/is missing then the cable can pop out VERY easily.

Nah... if the cable broke you only need to remove the cluster... not really the whole dash!
Was the cable plugged into the tranny?
To save some time, maybe consider unclipping the cable from the tranny and spinning it by hand. Have somebody watch the speedo. If the speedo needle moves then there is no reason to pull the cluster/dash.
If you end up pulling the dash and playing with the cable there, make sure you clip it to the back of the speedo correctly. If you look at the end of the cable there is a plastic ring with a square on it. That square snaps into a hole in the side of the snout that the cable slips into. If it doesn't clip in, then you can easily tug on the cable and it will disconnect from the cluster. If it does snap into the snout properly it will be snapped in place and should hold to a good tug on the cable.
