Spouses/Significant Other and Race Tracks
This does not necessarily need to be mutually exclusive.
There is a lot to do at a race track, besides hanging around wiating for your driver to come in off the track. Like help out at registration, tech, flagging, timing and scoring...........
Of course it means that you the driver will have to fend for yourself. You may or may not be doing that now. The upside is that if the other person gets involved, the money spending thing becomes less of a hassle and all of a sudden making track committments are not a begging, pleading type situation.
OF couse that means that the other person might be interested in driving. That could lead to more spending because then you want 2 cars. That means in house compettition even before you get to the track.
Like Grumpy and I..... Couldn't just have one Vette way back when and couldn't have 1 Camaro now. Of course I am probably still the better driver ( I don't have offs).......... But we are both at the track involved and love it.
Of course then you could had kids that get involved......

you know, if you also build in a day-care/child entertainment camp.... now you're talking! Preferably something aimed at making the next generation as hopelessly addicted as we are - for those kids that are still too young to get into go-karts...

Yeah - now we need a 3rd so the kid (my son Tony the pace car driver in his S10 Xtreme) can use it and not tie up my registration time.

We are looking into this; however it is hard. Since we are bascially a "traveling" club and not tied to one track, finding local people to have child-care is difficult. Also, a guaranteed space (that we don't get charged for) is not available at all tracks.
But some creative thinking among yourselves might help us out in this area. Some people would rather be with kids than on a track. Maybe they could help out with child care for the group.
How much would you be willing to pay to have someone come in and set up an area and do child care? I think this whole idea needs to be persued.
My daughter was at the track when she was 5 years old and dreamed of the day she would have her own car. Last year was her first year racing - a dream fulfilled, so it is possible.

Good thread
Yesh, Tammy will be coming to Summit Point (Carguys) to learn about flagging. What does this mean? One of two things could happen...
1. She flags, and I get the credits

2. She flags, gains interest in driving, wants another car, starts fighting with me about who's driving which events

Just as long as you can deal with it. She'll probably be a better driver than you.
Just think -- when the kids are gone and there's nothing left to talk about, there'll always be racing. and cars. and repairs. and competition.
YEAH!

1- would NASA endorse or sponsor such a daycare facility? there may be some liability issues here, not to mention various state regulations and probably a whole bunch of paperwork - God I love lawyers...
Maybe a un-official kid watching kind of thing would preferable?2- some mothers (ok, my wife) may have concern about the noise level associated with a race track, and the noxious fumes - so a location somewhat removed from the 600hp open-header V-8 (and Bryan's Type-R) may be good.
3- what would the kids do? I mean herding them all together for a while is fine, but they need to be entertained.
4- someone needs to reassure the parents that the people responsible for the kids are just that - responsible.
5- you need an area that offers some sort of shelter, and can be made somewhat secure, especially if it is near the paddock and pit areas.
6- maybe a voluntary/credit thing could be implemented. Wifes/husbands can volunteer to watch the kids for the day in exchange for credit towards track time, much like the corner workers. People with devoted spouses may get free track times, others may gain a newly addicted spouse.
7- as far as facilities solutions - I'm at a loss there. Maybe you can make it into a kids' shop - teaching them how to work on cars, take tire temps, change brake pads, etc. All you need is a donor Ford (j/k, ducking flames)

8- you can always get all the spouses together to watch the kids and complain about how much time and money their significant others are spending on this "stupid, dangerous sport" - it may be cathartic for them
or they may develop some new friendships. All joking aside, I think some kind of spouse and offspring entertainment/inclusion plan is a great idea, and also could be a big pain in the butt to implement. I have tried to point out the issues I can think of and a couple of potential solutions. Anyone else wanting to brainstorm? Maybe I should show this thread to my wife and see what she has to say...

I would never hear the end of that from the NC crew either
