Pinging with a '98 LS
My 5 speed '98 LS seems to have a pinging problem on 87 and 89 octane gas. Years ago when I had a '95, it wouldn't ping no matter what. So, do these cars ping on anything less than 91 octane, or is it likely that something is wrong? Timing seems to be where it's supposed to be. How does one retard timing on this car? Is there some sort of jumper that needs to be used?

over this past weekend i had a friend come over to my house to show me how to adjudt the valves, after doing so i go to him ,u have any idea why my car pings when i get on it hard, hes like hmmm, not really,so we go on to advance my timing to 18 degrees, after we jumped the service connector, check the tiing and what do ya know the previous owner allready had it advanced to 19-20 degrees, brought it back to 17-18 degrees and problem solved for me..i always run 89 octane in my 96 ls..
Thanks for the info. How does one "jump the service connector"? What's the sequence of events? Jump the connector, adjust the timing, then unjump? Am I supposed to check the timing with the connector jumped?

u know where the service connector is im guessing, well just put both ends of the paper clip in the two prongs, start the car, check engine light should be on,hook up timing light, check timing, retard if needed, turn off car, pull out the paper clip..
