There is also a couple codes that will get thrown if anything is malfunctioning.

Help me out on this guys, but can't you just run a test light or multimeter to the vtec pin on the ECU connection? The one that kicks in the solenoid?

Yeah, that's basically a VTEC light. You can either run it off the computer or directly from the solenoid; either works. Then use a 12v light or some kind of device that makes noise, and it will go off when the solenoid/computer goes to VTEC x-over.
