Default HELP with tires

This has been posted before I realize but I am looking for opinions on certain brands.

I am in market for tires, my current tires have good tread elft on them but arent speed rated they are touring tires and frankly suck. So i need some better tires.

Using this handy tire size calculator
http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html

I found the best size for me would be 185/65/14 for my 14 inch HX wheels.

I need four tires, I live in AZ so I am looking for excpetional dry grip with decent wet grip. I went to tire rack and found some BFG Traction t/a h for $56/ea. They had great ratings in both dry traction and road noise/comfort.

Anyone else have any experience with these before?
I dont want to spend too much but still want a good quality tire, any suggestions. I was also looking into Yoko Avid h4s or Bridgestone Turanza ls-t

Any help is appreciated.

Just curious, shoudn't you be looking for 185/60-14 tires instead of ones with a 65 sidewall? Also, what are your current tires?

From experience of my own or through friends, I can vouch for both the Turanzas and the Avids. The Turanzas are terrible. They've come as the OEM tire on things like Miatas, and any owner who wanted more performance usually replaced them long before they were worn out.

The Avids are decent all-season tires, but I can't imagine they'd be better than your current setup.

Quite frankly, if I was in your position of living in sunny Arizona and was looking for "excpetional dry grip with decent wet grip", I'd just go with something like the Falken Azenis in the 14" size. They're crazy cheap, will give you near-R-compound handling, improve your turn-in and will go through the rain pretty well until the tread wears down. The downside is they're quite heavy and will get noisy as they wear down.

Just my 2¢.

where can i find these (falkens), i heard good things about them.
My current tires are Firestone fr 680 185/65/r14 (85 s) they came with the rims and I just havent replaced them yet

I went with this size because the tire calculator said they were closet to stock height which means my speedo wont be off.

Id like 195s but i was told they are too wide for hx wheels.

I've always gotten mine through Vulcan Tire (http://www.vulcantire.com), but I know a lot of people who have also gone through Discount Tire (http://www.tires.com).

I talked to discount and after their insane install/balance charges ($20 per tire!) the grand total is $336.13 whereas if I ordered online it would be 80+ cheaper (from vulcan).

I might get the Falken Zeix instead, still good grip but 2x tread wear. Anyone run these before?
Anyone know of somewhere where you can order tires cheap but still get a warranty?

185/65/14 is stock 6th gen civic tire size. I have Summitomo Srixons on my steelies for fall/winter use, they are all season and fairly good grip.

Summer wheels I just got Yoko ES100's in a 195/55/15 tire, straight plus one for that generation civic and stock SI tire size.

i've seen ppl run 195/60-14 on HX rims, but it is kinda streching it. i have falken ziex on my car right now, and i ithink theyre really decent for all season tires. other budget performance tires include kumho 712 (not sure if they come in 14"), or yoko es100. discount tire is usually REALLY cheap compared with other chain stores. they have free rotation, flat repair, and balancing if you buy from their stores.

I run 195/60-14 Falken Azenis on my stock steel wheels. They're not too wide and they grip like crazy.

The Azenis are only rated at 200, I believe, so they're not going to last nearly as long as a touring tire. But that's the price you pay for their huge grip and fast turn-in characteristics.

Quite frankly, $75/tire is a REALLY good price for performance tires. For comparison, go check the prices on Toyo Proxes T1-S or Khumo V700's in the same size (though I DON'T recommend the V700's for the street - even in Arizona).

Just remember, every tire is a compromise of something else. You give up mileage for a soft sticky compound. You give up grip for mileage. You give up comfort for better turn-in. You give up grip for better rain or snow performance. Sometimes you even give up grip for looks (anyone remember the original Paradas?).

But to be honest with you, if you're looking for "excpetional dry grip with decent wet grip" plus good mileage at the cost of a cheapie touring tire, I'm afraid that tire doesn't exist.

AZENIS !!!!

I bought some old wheels of a friend that had his year + old azenis... they still grip great. Falken's site says they are street safe till 2/32" of tread... In pouring rain they aren't soo great, but mild rain and wet roads, no problem and dry.. **** man they are superior. I grab the wheel and just go at a turn the car just follows instantly...

I will replace these with azenis...
(I got a winter set of wheels)
